Roberts reports from Boshead that French’s cavalry seized a drift over the Walsch river last evening just as Boers were about to occupy the line. Eight miles from Kronstadt, the Boers evacuated their first entrenchments during the night and are under reconnaissance.
Buller advances thirty thousand troops in three columns toward the Drakensburg passes into the Free State as part of the Ladysmith operation.
The trial of John McCain, an older resident on Pine Street, concluded before Commissioner Randolph. McCain, who had pled not guilty on Wednesday, reversed his plea this afternoon and was bound over to the grand jury under a $100 bond, then released on bond.

Fire at Fukin Japan on April 18 destroyed 1,600 houses and thirty temples along with principal buildings. Sixteen people died and about a hundred were injured. Loss estimated at 5,000,000 yen about 2,500,000 dollars.
Mr. L. B. Hedge resigns as manager of the An niston postal office effective the 15th. His successor is Mr. J. W. Majors of Atlanta who arrived to assume duties. Hedge takes a position with the New York Equitable Life Insurance Co headquartered in Birmingham. He is well liked and will be missed locally.
Dr Young departs Monday for Chicago to pursue a six week postgraduate course in dental surgery. He will work with Dr Brophy, reputed as a leading U S dentist, and aims to absorb the newest methods and instruments to enhance his practice in the South.
Seven people died when a freight wreck trapped in the Baltimore and Ohio tunnel ignited flames. Fire followed the collision and over a dozen firefighters were injured or overcome by smoke while battling the blaze. Traffic remains entirely stopped as wreckage burns.
In Seaside Sporting Club at Coney Island on May 12 James J. Jeffries defeated Jim Corbett in twenty two rounds of scientific fighting. The return to form proved Jeffries the rightful world champion as he delivered a decisive knockout that stunned thousands of spectators.
Mr W B Donnahoo suffered a serious accident at the car works yesterday about 3 pm. While operating heavy shears his left hand was caught in the machine, two fingers mashed off at the first joint. Wounded hand dressed and recovering. Friends extend sympathy.
Talladega May 12. Thursday morning at 8 o'clock the home of Mrs. L. M. Taylor was destroyed by fire. The building was a total wreck though considerable of the contents were saved. Mrs. Taylor is the mother of Hon. Hapais Tayler of Mobile.
A new broom factory by A H Smith begins operations in Anniston Monday in a corrugated iron building on Wilmer Street near Ninth. Eight or nine workers are hired, machinery is in place, broom straw on hand, and a superintendent will run the plant with a name chosen soon. This is Anniston’s second broom factory after Alabama Broom Works.
A Brightman & Co delivery wagon overturned after a frightened horse bolted near the fountain on Tenth Street. A boy, son of Mrs. B Brasher, was thrown from the wagon and struck his head on an iron trough. A physician treated a serious but non dangerous head wound.
Judge Lapsiey issues decrees in several cases including Mynate v Mynatt and Teague executor versus Wright Anniston City Land Co. vs Drewry Boswell. Lewis & Grant vs Sisky heard this morning with no decision yet. Local ads note boys pants 10 cents and boys waists 12 4 and 19 cents at Lemons.
Washington May 12 reports the House Judiciary committee will report the Anti Trust bill on Tuesday. The bill is framed by the sub committee on trusts and a date for consideration has not been fixed though early action is expected.
The Oxanna city council met last night and conducted routine business. An ordinance was passed establishing a new street from Constantine Avenue to Commerce Street.
Mr Wade of Edwardsville was out shooting fish on the creek when a misfire left him badly wounded. The shot passed through his right side and removed three fingers from his left hand while several pellets struck his mouth. The incident occurred yesterday evening and he is seriously hurt. A movement led by Mr L H Kaplan and others seeks to raise a fund to cover expenses for one or two Anniston citizens to tour Northern and Eastern cities promoting industrial development. A public meeting will be held next week to form subscription lists, with mayor and O Z Henderson likely to be sent North. The Land Company would pay 20 percent of expenses, aiming to benefit Anniston. The initiative stems from the Land Company board's suggestion and a letter from W A Davis of April 23.
