The Smalley Monument Takes Root in a Village Graveyard
Mrs. Cornelia Smalley, widow of a deceased man, is approached by a traveling monument salesman. She buys into a plan to honor her husband with a granite memorial and then leads a cemetery beautification, forming a village cemetery association funded by annual dues. Her dedication turns her life toward constant labor in the cemetery, where she serves as treasurer and manager and transforms the grounds into a communal project.
