The King of the Carnival arrives by royal train at 2 o'clock amid cheers. Mayor Henderson and officials welcome him. the key to the city is presented at Midway. The procession, Elliott band, and guards headline a festive opening as Anniston prepares for a full carnival week with a floral parade and theater ball.
Mr. R. R. Dyer of Orr & Co in the Mallory Plowman building was found unconscious between 11 and noon with the cash drawer missing $25. Fellow manager J. A. Moore left the office shortly before 11 and returned at 12:30 to discover Dyer in agony. Physicians summoned. authorities consider possible use of knock-out drops.
Washington May 4 after careful consideration of the situation in the Philippines the administration has decided to reduce the army there to 40 000 men.
Miss Sarah Bishop, Talladega's queen, arrived in the city this afternoon and will be hosted by Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Brewer this week. She is joined by attendants Misses McMillian, Chambers, and Watt and by friends including Miss Pearl Hammond.
May 6 Jacksonville faces hunger and tension as relief arrives for 10 000 homeless with trains and boats delivering provisions. Martial law enforces store opening, tents are issued, and 5 000 residents flee while officials tally 11 000 000 in property losses and search for missing.
Will N. Perkins and Barrett Payne have purchased the Empire Steam laundry from L. T. Smith and will operate it on Tenth street. They also run the White Cloud laundry in Rome and will consolidate assets here with the Empire. The new combined plant will be well equipped and up-to-date.
