Jacksonville faces a disastrous fire that destroyed 130 blocks and 1300 houses, leaving 10,000 to 15,000 homeless and causing up to 15 million dollars in damages. The blaze affected hotels theaters churches and residences as officials scramble to aid victims and consider appeals for aid.
Anniston prepares for Purple Week with a full carnival program including floral parade trades display and a grand ball. Thousands are expected daily as special excursion trains and rail rates from up to 75 miles lure visitors. The official schedule covers mid way openings and the guard ball at Noble Street Theater honoring carnival royalty.
Program for the week lists daily free attractions at the carnival gate opening on Tenth and Wilmer streets. Highlights include the King of the Carnival from Fairyland at 2 p.m., Ladooia the wire king at 3, La Nole ladder act at 4, and LaGerte on the flying trapeze at 5. Mid-way runs until 11 p.m.
A Grand floral parade leads the city at 10 a.m. with a line of march through principal streets. A Battle of Confetti follows and prizes include a solid brass gilded onyx table and vase for the best decorated out of town queen float.
At 10 a.m. a parade of secret societies labor organizations and teachers displays is planned. An afternoon show runs 2 p.m. to 1 p.m. mid way attractions include the Battle of Confetti at night with free attractions listed for Tuesday.
At 10 30 p m a military parade will feature companies from Anniston Oxford Talladega Gadsden and Birmingham. At 11 am a drill contest will award prizes for the best drilled company and the best drilled individual. Continned on Sth page.
