Mountain Blasted To Form Embankment For Pacific Railroad
A 200 foot high granite mountain was blown into Dale Creek three miles south of Sherman station as part of the Union Pacific line work. Contractor Cushing planned a 9000 pound black powder charge in a 46 foot tunnel to topple the west hill into the creek, creating space for an elevated grade and a 20 foot causeway. About 500 spectators, from Cheyenne and nearby districts, watched as the blast moved 5000 cubic yards of rock and left cliff faces on two sides.
