The Huntsville church closes due to debt after a mortgage funded by Mrs. Hundley thirteen years ago with $4,500. Mortgage payments stopped about six years ago and $950 remains due. Protracted meetings are planned at the county courthouse as Sunday services continue without interruption.
Huntsville June 28 The doors of the Christian church are closed and revival meetings planned for next week will not begin until mortgagee treasurer Mrs M E Handley is paid 950 dollars owed on a church building loan. Col Hundley and others oppose handling funds for running expenses until debts are settled. Elder T F Smith was asked to consider pastoring. Regular services resume only after payment.
Velo Shirly, a young white man arrested in Talladega by Postoffice Inspector Glasscock, was tried before Commissioner Randolph for impersonating a postoffice inspector. His bond of 200 was not met and he was jailed. The case relates to offenses alleged weeks earlier. Shirly has notable relatives in Tuscaloosa.
A local sale advertises dozens of shirts and about 500 remaining items. New lots will be distributed for this week's trade with special prices in men's pants from 25 cents to 1.50 dollars. Prices are cut recklessly for shirts pants or ties.
A garbled sale notice touts 5 or 18 cent items and $2 sets at deep discounts. It advertises ladies corsets from 20 to 85 cents, silk handkerchiefs at 15 cents, and 25 percent off wholesale prices on dry goods shoes and notions as bargain prices drive fast sales.
Admiral Seymour's expedition relief announced by Chee Foo in Shanghai. General Chaffee, ordered to command American troops in China, departed Washington for San Francisco with aid Lieutenant Harper. In city court today a decree was rendered in favor of the defendant in Carroll versus Marcus. Fred Langdon, cdl., was fined 8.20 for gaming. The divorce suit G W Staples versus Jessie Staples was withdrawn and dismissed. J F Smith versus W L Miller and Duke Bros versus Prater were submitted to the court.
