County jail conditions drew sharp warnings from Dr Oates and prompted Wellborn to back county construction of a new prison. Mayor Wikle remained noncommittal while city plans for improvements proceed, as Oates condemns Calhoun jail for ventilation and hygiene failures.
In New York on June 28 reports say ten rich and charitable women could be summoned by the grand jury to testify about a smugling syndicate accused of importing jewels Paris gowns and bric a brac into the United States free of duty. Information has been given to Collector Loeb and Deputy Surveyor Parr continues active on the case.
This morning at the Parker Memorial church Miss Mary Ray and Mr William E Sears were joined in matrimony by Rev W F Yarborough. The couple plan a two months visit to Seattle and other points. Mr Sears works with the Atlanta Birmingham and Atlantic railroad. Miss Ray formerly studied at Anniston College.
Mrs. R. M. Ingram has gone to Camp Point Alabama to visit relatives and rest.
Talladega June 28 Special The first Presbyterian encampment of the synod of Alabama opens Friday evening June 30 at Shocco Springs. The program lists sessions on Christian Endeavor, Sunday School topics, teacher training, and home mission work with notable speakers from Alabama and neighboring states.
A brief wedding notice details Miss Josie Miller Driver and Mr. Robert Whitehead marrying at the First Methodist Church with Rev. George Stoves officiating. The couple, who had planned a Tennessee visit, instead left for a short wedding trip to Talladega after the ceremony. Local church officials are listed from several Alabama presbyteries.
In Selma on June 28 Hill pitched a magnificent no hit no run game for the Models in the first round of a doubleheader beating Aniston 10 to 0. Hill struck out 14, allowed one hit, and showed perfect control. An argument between managers Fisher and Howard sparked crowd unrest but was quelled by law enforcement.
A. Ullman and W. H. Elam plan to canvass Anniston business leaders to raise 35 to 40 dollars monthly to maintain the city wagon yard. Since L. H. Kaplan’s death control has passed, and they argue the yard is a low cost, high benefit advertisement drawing shoppers. Continued on Fourth Page.
The Church of Christ revival ends this evening with Evangelist S M Bernard delivering The Holy Land lecture after months in Palestine. He recalls Officer Cunningham killed on duty last Sunday and urges readers to value salvation, noting the city will remember the officer.
Washington June 28 recommendations call for discharge of two responsible state department officials and strong criticism of loose bookkeeping after the Day portrait scandal. The targets are Thomas Morrison disbursing clerk and William Michael former clerk now consul at Calcutta, believed to have misappropriated 1600.
McGuffin faces two charges in a preliminary trial set for Thursday July 11 for the murder of Officer John L. Cunningham and assault with intent to murder Chief H T Gleeson. He is confined in the county jail and has retained attorney P J F Wharton. A pistol linked to McGuffin was found near a frainer during the running fight. it is an old large caliber derringer.

Judge Newman of the Federal court denied Charles W. Morse a habeas corpus writ. Morse's attorneys filed notice of appeal to the District Court of Appeals.
Washington reports the administration has expanded its anti trust campaign to the American Smelting and Refining Company as investigations by the bureau of corporations begin. William G. Gilmore of Arbuckle Sugar Refining testified about a rate war with the Havemeyer sugar trust, saying Arbuckle lost 1.25 million dollars in two years and estimating Havemeyer losses were greater.
