L. H. Kaplan plans a six building brick block on Noble Street between Eighth and Ninth, expanding beyond his current stores. Architects are drawing plans and construction could start soon, adding two story structures and modern facilities to the rapidly developing city area.
Princeton N J Jan 23 Old Nassau students were awakened by a fire threatening university buildings. About one thousand students joined the town volunteer fire department and helped extinguish the blaze. The Alhambra building burned with a loss of 870 000 before being quenched.
W J Hunter of Brompton Alabama married Emma Savannah Armstrong, 17, in Bremen Georgia after traveling by train for a quick ceremony. Judge Evans and Squire Cole officiated as the groom declared ownership of his bride, and the couple returned home smiling despite Alabama remarriage rules.
Police Officer J. H. Durand of Hobson City died Friday afternoon from wounds inflicted by Mack Bush. Durand had been hospitalized in Anniston after an unrewarding pursuit and operation. Bush fled the scene and remained at large. Durand left real estate and a life insurance policy with a will dated the 20th.
Father Costello delivers talks at Sacred Heart church on Catholic teaching and Mary veneration. He argues Catholics honor Mary as mother of God and intercession, not worship. Two concerts Sunday cover Mass and Why I Am a Catholic, drawing Protestants and large crowds. This is his final Anniston lecture series.
The census shows a rise in cotton bales from 1908 to January 16 totaling 12,667,231 with prior year totals 10,539,551 and 12,076,199 for 1907. By January 16 this year 24,441 ginneries were operating with Alabama and Mississippi ginners contributing 1,317,266 and 1,551,265 bales respectively.
In New York the Arctic club of America hosts its 15th annual dinner at the Hotel Marlboro. Five living survivors of the 1881 84 Lady Franklin bay expedition under Lt. A W Greely will attend and Rear Admiral W N Schlcy will be installed as club president.

Beach Hargis, awaiting a second trial for his father’s killing, broke into a blind tiger bar, drank whisky, held up his cousin and took her purse, and fired at a supper table. Bondsmen will surrender him to authorities again.
Four men were killed and many injured when an avalanche swept over huts around the Bird mine near Ouray. Dozens of houses were in the slide path and more lives may be lost. Recovery will wait until midsummer due to remaining snow.

Attorney Neil P Sterne has taken an informal role in aiding P Moore, jailed for alleged theft of a mileage book from a Union station. Sterne notes Moore’s poor health and moral decline but recalls him as a once healthy student and friend.
A wireless report says the French liner Republic was rammed off Nantucket shoals by an unknown steamer and sank after being disabled. The Lorraine, its sister ship, was sent to aid and reported the Republic in a dangerous condition with passengers and crew being evacuated to lifeboats and rafts.
London reports Queen Alexandra seriously ill with influenza and two doctors in constant attendance. The 64 year old monarch has enjoyed good health until recently. King Edward VII’s accession anniversary is marked in London with flags, bells, and salutes on the eight year since proclamation.
A Shoreham dinner in Washington tonight honors Vice President elect James S. Sherman. Arranged by New York's congressional delegation, the guest list includes President Roosevelt and all prominent New Yorkers in official life, with Speaker Cannon the sole non New Yorker.

President-elect Taft and party reach Charleston for a formal program including golf at the Country Club and a banquet at the Charleston Hotel. P. C. Knox and Frank H. Hitchcock are summoned for a Sunday conference before Taft heads to Panama aboard the armored cruiser North Carolina, with Montana as convoy.
Nashville Jan 24 The Cooper trial did not hear today owing to Judge Hart’s illness. The court will reconvene Monday morning to consider affidavits challenging juror Leigh, who has already been accepted by both sides.
Mrs Carrie Nation, released from Newcastle prison on condition to leave the city, plans a London variety stage debut next Monday at a music hall in the East End. She begins a tour by joining Sunday services at Shakespeare theater Battersea to press for an immediate total prohibition law.
