January 13 report from St Johns Newfoundland recounts the loss of the unknown two mast steamer with about sixty aboard and possibly passengers. All perished as the ship broke up in a heavy gale with crews drowned or crushed during panic and fire fed by kerosene in cargo.

Florence January 13 Chief Lipscomb and Special Deputy Wilson arrested W R Stewart eight miles from the city and brought him back as a witness before the inquest jury He was released and no disclosure was made Stewart joined admitted suspects in McClure murder Boyle the jailed suspect maintains an alibi claiming he spent Tuesday night at Mrs Smiths home and left town Wednesday afternoon at 4 The claim is supported by gun use and bullet moulds reportedly linked to the crime but the Smiths testimony remains unavailable and Boyle expresses no fear of the preliminary hearing.

Revenue Agent Checks Anniston Probate Office for Stamp Compliance

A U S revenue agent visited the Anniston probate office Thursday to verify notes deeds mortgages and other instruments for required revenue stamps. The inspector found no violations or neglect and reported all papers stamped correctly. Also listed is a for sale notice: one bedroom set bed stove lounge and cook stove at 1116 West 17th.

McCoy Edges Choynski After Timekeeper Relieves Defeat

Kid McCoy defeated Joe Choynski in a three round bout at Broadway Athletic Club New York January 13. A faulty time signal shortened the second round, saving McCoy from decisive loss as Choynski had floored him four times. A spectator collapsed and died during the bout as Col Michael Padden claimed the second round ran forty seconds shorter than official time.

Mayor Henderson presided in police court this morning and fined Mike McCann on two charges. He received $2.50 and costs for being drank and disorderly and $3.50 and costs for using profane language in the presence of females.

Mayor grants leniency to crippled man during morning hearing

The mayor in Anniston heard two cases this morning. A crippled man known as Tie was charged with drank and disorderly conduct but the mayor showed leniency and may let him leave town. Mike Mekkwen, a white man, stood before the mayor for drunkenness last night and was fined 2 50 and costs. Frank Reames, a white man, faced a long trial for carrying a concealed pistol after a mill workers’ dispute. Witnesses differed on the pistol presence and Meyer Herderson reserved judgment until Monday.
