January 13 report from St Johns Newfoundland recounts the loss of the unknown two mast steamer with about sixty aboard and possibly passengers. All perished as the ship broke up in a heavy gale with crews drowned or crushed during panic and fire fed by kerosene in cargo.
Debris and bodies line the rocky shore after a ship breaks up in a severe gale. A survivor perished after failing to reach footing from rigging and exposure at night. Wreckage and a trunk of women’s clothing wash ashore, hinting at passengers aboard.
A bold robbery in Wedowee Randolph County where a post office letter containing 142 dollars was taken. Sheriff arrests Dave Clifton, son of W N Clifton. Preliminary trial before U S Commissioner Thompson. Clifton bound over to the grand jury in 1000 dollars, jailed if bond not given.
The district begins its congressional contest as Hon. Joe H. King of this city announces his run for the Democratic nomination. The Star notes his wide popularity and strong credentials as a reliable and loyal Democrat, signaling an active campaign ahead.
Florence January 13 Chief Lipscomb and Special Deputy Wilson arrested W R Stewart eight miles from the city and brought him back as a witness before the inquest jury He was released and no disclosure was made Stewart joined admitted suspects in McClure murder Boyle the jailed suspect maintains an alibi claiming he spent Tuesday night at Mrs Smiths home and left town Wednesday afternoon at 4 The claim is supported by gun use and bullet moulds reportedly linked to the crime but the Smiths testimony remains unavailable and Boyle expresses no fear of the preliminary hearing.
A U S revenue agent visited the Anniston probate office Thursday to verify notes deeds mortgages and other instruments for required revenue stamps. The inspector found no violations or neglect and reported all papers stamped correctly. Also listed is a for sale notice: one bedroom set bed stove lounge and cook stove at 1116 West 17th.
Kid McCoy defeated Joe Choynski in a three round bout at Broadway Athletic Club New York January 13. A faulty time signal shortened the second round, saving McCoy from decisive loss as Choynski had floored him four times. A spectator collapsed and died during the bout as Col Michael Padden claimed the second round ran forty seconds shorter than official time.
Henry Edmondson remained at home after injuries from a horse kick but is now able to go out. Willie B. Edmondson went out today for the first time since weeks of rheumatism illness.
Mayor Henderson presided in police court this morning and fined Mike McCann on two charges. He received $2.50 and costs for being drank and disorderly and $3.50 and costs for using profane language in the presence of females.
The mayor in Anniston heard two cases this morning. A crippled man known as Tie was charged with drank and disorderly conduct but the mayor showed leniency and may let him leave town. Mike Mekkwen, a white man, stood before the mayor for drunkenness last night and was fined 2 50 and costs. Frank Reames, a white man, faced a long trial for carrying a concealed pistol after a mill workers’ dispute. Witnesses differed on the pistol presence and Meyer Herderson reserved judgment until Monday.
County and city license taxes must be paid before Tuesday to avoid extra costs. County bills incur a ten percent penalty after Tuesday. City licenses face court appearances and fines from 5 to 50 dollars if unpaid by Tuesday. City Tax Collector Quinn says enforcement will be rigid.
The church leader, Bishop Jackson, submits a resignation letter stating a Supreme desire to serve the church. He cites a grievous wrong that has driven his decision and calls for accountability within the church leadership.
In a letter from Hut, the Bishop Coadjutor of Alabama requests relief and notes the Diocesan Council meeting in Anniston last May produced a nonrecorded resolution urging resignation.
