Calhoun county commissioners close 1899 with a final year report showing total revenue from all sources 851,186.11 and total expenditures 854,? plus a year end balance of 241.42 in favor of receipts. The official statement lists real and personal property valuations at 5,316,546.00 and a general county tax rate of 35 mills.
Tabulated county disbursements show totals for salaries, court expenses, jail goods, and public functions. Early this morning Frank and McKee located a bale of cotton and a wagon with a pair of mules abandoned at Fourth and Noble. They pursued a Black man named Penry Kelly toward Glen Addie but he escaped into the woods. The wagon and stock belong to local residents S N Milligan and Tom Anderson. theft occurred about 6 o clock last night.
The Keights of Damon order based in Macon Georgia paid a $2000 policy to WM Hight whose father died months ago. Secretary L Qanta of the local lodge arranged the payment several days ago. This is the third policy Quinn has paid in Anniston for the order. The late Mayor F M Hight was local lodge commander. a successor will be elected at an upcoming meeting.
A letter from Alexandria Alabama dated January 10 1900 urges Calhoun County support for Gen A F McGhee as state senator. The writer contrasts McGhee with Anniston candidates and asks local voters to back a man with home focus and experience to serve Calhoun County.
Mr. Joe Willett of Anniston, president of the Alabama Bar Association, visited Montgomery on professional business during his first trip since promoting the Van Wyck boom in New York. He denied any political aspirations while praising the visit and the New York hospitality and stated the Van Wyck campaign remains active.
