Miners Trapped After Water Flooding Abandoned Shaft
In Tuskaloosa on February 21 thirteen negro miners were entombed when water from an abandoned shaft burst in two miles from the State Insane Asylum. Eleven escaped in a race for life, while rescuers pump out water. air access and time to clear the mine raise grim doubts about the entombed workers.
Anniston Knitting Mills Incorporated Formed in Anniston
Articles of incorporation filed with Probate Judge E. I. Crook establish the Anniston Knitting Mills with capital of 25000 dollars. Stockholders include W. W. Stringfellow E. L. Tyler A. L. Tyler Jr and T. C. The Evening Star noted weeks earlier. The firm has purchased the old mill building and installed new machinery and will employ 75 to 100 operatives with W. W. Stringfellow E. L. Tyler and A. L. Tyler Jr as directors.
Fire Burns Large Atlanta Grocery House and Block
A major blaze in Atlanta destroyed the wholesale grocery house of J. J. and J. E. Maddox and an entire Collins Street block. The fire’s cause, total losses, and insurance are not yet determined. Maddox’s firm was among the South’s largest.
Jurisdiction Ceded Over Public Building Site
Montgomery Feb 21 The bill passed the house to cede to the United States for a limited time jurisdiction over the site for the erection of the government building in Anniston. The measure has passed the senate and awaits the governor's signature to become law. The government demanded jurisdiction before construction could begin, and with jurisdiction granted work may proceed.
