Oxford Lake may host a county agricultural fair this year after the Northeast Alabama Fair Association abandoned the project. Local leaders, led by Howard W. Sexton, propose using park buildings and the Oxford Lake Line to offer ten cent round trips and free park use to attract exhibitors and visitors. premiums would be paid in full if funds allow, with pro rata payments if short to avoid debt and boost local display and advertising.
Attalla Alabama February 20. The evidentiary hearing in the case of B B Spears versus John L Burnett to contest Burnetts Seventh district seat opened Monday. Col William H Denson of Birmingham presides with Col W R Dorton of Gadsden assisting Burnetts side. One hundred witnesses are summoned mostly African American. Testimony will extend at least five days. Sixteen witnesses were examined yesterday with no fraud found.
A Washington dispatch reports that President and Senator Hanna consider replacing Alabama Republican patronage with gold Democrat appointments to federal offices. The move aims to curb factionalism and show the party in Alabama must serve more than patronage. In Topeka Carrie Nation says she will not post bail, claiming the Lord wishes her rest while she remains in jail, stating God provides and that her confinement inspires others to continue her work.
Birmingham reports the discovery of Alvis J. Hamilton a prominent Guin Marion county Alabama merchant. His body lay buried in quicksand with the head protruding from a ghastly neck wound. Authorities believe heavy drinking and possible hallucinations led him into the swamp.

Chief Deputy Le Grand leaves for the state penitentiary to fetch Eliz Abernathy a one legged woman recently sent up on murder charges. HW McCarty counsel filed for a new trial and the supreme court ordered another trial. Case set for city court next term.
The Montgomery Journal notes Anniston is expanding with Oxanna as a proposed combined name. The piece hints at Anniston absorbing Oxford and forming Oxanna in time. A stray line mentions Harmson Belcher Plumbing Co offering gas fixtures.
Herald Square Opera Company opens a two night engagement with The Mascot and Girofla in rotation. The troupe of twenty five performers earns praise from press and public as it visits this city tonight and tomorrow night.
