Jamont Texas August 28 The Beaumont oil well remains active with a spray of oil and gas as rescuers work. Divers from Galveston led by F W Chase arrived to assess the deadly gas and confirm the fate of the gusher victims and the well’s shutdown process.
A nearby municipality elects its new city officers, selecting George Draper Ad Snow Thomas Smith Isham Truss and Skip Handley for the council. Garrison elected mayor with 28 votes while Rev. E. L. Davis garners 17 as the leading contender in a race noted for its all African American slate.
An estimated 30 000 Sir Knights in uniform filled the Louisville parade for the Knights Templar conclave as noon heat caused eleven prostrations. One marcher, Irwin Barnard of Greenville Indiana, was seriously affected. a Y M C A stand collapsed and Mrs James Carnahan of Washington broke an ankle.
In McKeesport Pennsylvania on August 18 a crowd of 200 to 360 strikers blocked river access after reports the Dewler Tip plant would resume at 6 am. A boat attempting to land near the villa was met with a volley of questions from angry workers who received no answer and left the area.
President Shaffer approved a peace plan by the National Civic Federation and Amalgamated Association. A mail vote will decide acceptance of a provisional scale for tin plate mills and the Hoop Company, with U S Steel Headquarters officials awaiting the result. The plan aims to reassure mill workers while resuming signed scales from July 1.
Bishop Allen announces transfers affecting parishes in Alabama and Florida. Father Tom Kennedy leaves Warrenton for Tuscaloosa, Rev D A Brady moves from Anniston to Warrenton, and Father Doyle departs St Pauls Birmingham for Blocton. Father Sweeney from Niagara Falls will join St Pauls as OReillys assistant.
The Quintard Avenue Land Co. formed on the recently purchased residence property from Woodstock Iron Works is ready for business. Stock is priced at $500 per share with half already taken by H. W. Sexton J. C. Sproull W. H. Weatherly L. H. Kaplan T. E. Kilby and J. L. Wikle. The remaining $20 000 of stock is offered at par on attractive terms.
