Drought Fueled Destitution Strikes Zapata County Texas

Fort Worth dispatch reports severe destitution in Zapata County Texas as drought devastates the area. In Carrizo the county seat a mother and three children died of starvation and a body of another mother was found along a road two miles from home. Mayor Hicks of San Antonio launches a relief drive as water dries up and cattle perish. the famine area lies fifty miles from the railroad.

Two men, James Smith and John McDaniels, died while attempting to shut off a massive oil gusher at Block SS Spindle Top heights in Beaumont Texas. The Palestine Beaumont Oil Company well exploded in a flood of oil and steam, threatening the surrounding prairie and drawing heroic efforts from workers.

Negro man with a scythe fends off mob in Morgan

Enoch Henderson a black farmer from Moulton Heights used a scythe to deter a 25 man masked white mob swelling to avenge a prior dispute with Noel Graham. Graham was seriously injured by a brick thrown during the confrontation.
