A massive blast on Locust Street in Philadelphia destroyed five buildings and killed an estimated ten to twenty or more people with at least thirty five inside. Fire and debris hampered rescue as neighbors aided the injured before firemen arrived.
Canton August 6 Colonel David G Colson of Kentucky former Fourth Kentucky recruiter and Frankfort shooting figure called on President today. Colson said the visit was personal and a brief stopover en route to Cleveland.
Montgomery August 6. Hon W W Whiteside of Calhoun introduced an ordinance in the Constitutional convention proposing creation of a new county from parts of Calhoun Cleburne and Cherokee counties Piedmont would be the county seat of the new entity.
Jake Champion attempted a burglary at the express office last night. He pled guilty in police court and was turned over to state authorities for confinement in county jail with bond set at $500. Champion, who violated his parole, faces about six years plus sentencing for the latest crime.
Jake Champion, a parolee, was shot and captured during a Jackson ville express office burglary by Frank Woodruff a trusted employee. Woodruff fired after a loaded pistol failed first. He then secured the inmate who was later jailed as Champion. The incident sparked local praise and headlines.
Pirrsspure Pa August 6 A faint glimmer of hope arises as Amalgamated Associa tion President Shaffer hints the great steel workers strike may be settled. He delays a general order and offers Federal Steel National Steel and National Tube time to seek a settlement, with a likely end of the week. Fred Williams of the Alabama fields, in Pittsburgh, rejects rumors of a large Negro labor influx and asserts continued union influence and expected association victory.
Empress Frederick, widow of Emperor William, died yesterday in Cronberg at 6 15 PM after a sudden decline. Doctors reported no change at 4 PM as the dowager empress lost consciousness with dropsy and cancer noted as contributing factors. Her children and the emperor were at her bedside for most of the day.
Anniston College hosts a showdown this afternoon as Gadsden seeks to even the series after yesterday's loss. John Green of Alabama City, once a star in Anniston, leads Gadsden alongside Jacksonville natives John Hames and Dave Goudlett in a bid to claim bragging rights.
