The Vatican reports Cardinal Guiseppe Sarto elected Pope on the seventh ballot at 11 AM. He adopts the name Pius X, a choice said to give universal satisfaction. A costly mistake by Shelby treasurer leads a judge to order the company to turn over records to a receiver.
Judge Jones ordered Southern Car and Foundry to turn over its books to receiver T. G. Bush. The bankrupt firm has three receivers, including Colonel Bush, Thomas P. Gillespie, and J. M. Elliott Jr., with auditors to begin once books are seized.
Capt J M Elliott Jr former president of Southern Car and Foundry and now Alabama receiver speaks publicly on the company’s affairs. He notes three federal courts claim jurisdiction and that receivers are in place in New Jersey Tennessee and Alabama. He says no talk until a court decision. a hearing is set before Judge Jones on August 5. Boyer offers bargains on outfits and trousers.

Gapspex Ala August 4 Lindsey Butler 12 son of David Butler drowned in the Coosa river at Alford's Bend Sunday about 1 o clock while swimming with Frank and Will Ramsey. He went beyond his depth and despite efforts he did not resurface. Body not recovered. Family prominent in Etowah county.

Montgomery Aug 4. Warrant clerk Brooks Smith releases a tally of monthly salaries at the state capitol. The list covers Governor and Auditor offices, education, agriculture, tax, land, and more with amounts ranging from 50 to 916.66, plus various clerks, guards, and prison expenses. The June convict hire costs add 7,112.69 for Elope No 10 and 4,360 for Flat Top, with overwork paid to prisoners. Although claims of enormous salaries persist, the records suggest modest official pay rolls.
The Confederate veterans of Calhoun, Cleburne and Erowah counties will hold their annual reunion at Schenk's Springs tomorrow and Thursday. Speeches will be made by Hon. J. W. Bush, Hon. J. Thomas Heflin, Hon. Woodson J. Martin, and Hon. Lon W. Grant. A large attendance and a great time is expected. Berry Going, who killed Pink Davis, was tried and sentenced to seven years in the penitentiary near Spring Garden.
Philadelphia league pitcher Frank Sparks, on his way to Memphis for a friend's wedding, is expected to start for the Invincibles in Thursday's game with New Decatur. He may also pitch for Anniston if the teams agree, then return to Philadelphia. He has been throwing phenomenal ball this year.
The Birmingham Ledger reports eleventh hour plans for a new Republican weekly in Gadadtea within the white district, with Thomas Stevenson named editor in chief. The lily white doctrine will be taught, aiming to grow into a daily eventually, despite Roosevelt era debates. Stevenson is described as an old line Republican.

Montgomery August 4 examiner’s report states county treasurer L J Carden misused public funds by transferring 795199 from special county road land to general fund without authority. Attorney General Williamson supports that Carden owes the amount to Shelby county.
