California and Rome August 3 No successor to Leo XIII has yet been chosen. From the smoke issuing from the Sistine chapel chimney a vast multitude gathered around St Peters as another day of conclave ended without a result. The leading candidates retain strength and no compromise candidate has appeared. Public interest remains high after the pope's death, replacing the apathy that followed it.
An earthquake lasting nearly thirty seconds was felt in Europe and San Francisco at 10:30 last night. The tremor, among the longest in years, caused no expected damage. California reports and Standford University confirm the duration, while dispatches note destruction in Filattiera and Mulazzo in Tuscany, near Spezia on the Gulf of Genoa.
A bankruptcy petition was filed in Knoxville on a Southern Car and Foundry Company with operations in Lenoir City Memphis Gadsden and Anniston alleging two million dollars in debt and one million in assets. The group pledged loyalty to the college and promised to boost patronage.
In Monnie Alabama on August 5 at 2 30 PM the pleasure yacht Florodora was struck by lightning off the Point Clear wharf. Led yard Scott a former professor at a Japanese university and Bruce Granville Line coln a visiting investor died instantly and William Brewton, the boat’s pilot, died later. Scott’s young daughter and Charles Baldwin were burned but survived after medical care.
Anniston remains steady and growing despite the Southern Car and Foundry plant idle.
