A massive blast at an electro chemical powder plant near Griesheim Germany killed and injured hundreds. Fire spread to nearby houses as a northeast wind carried embers. Official tallies varied with dozens unconfirmed as workers’ lists awaited.
The United States government purchased the southeast corner lot at Noble and Twelfth streets for 3800 dollars, acquiring lots 1 2 3 4 and ten feet off lot 5 in block 2 from J C Sproull and wife. Deeds filed with Probate Judge EB Crook and Maj. W H Standifer of Birmingham, who armed a treasury warrant for 5800 dollars, arranged payment and closing. Officials expect rapid progress though start date for construction remains undetermined.

Portmouth peaked briefly and should fall toward evening with other stations like Ripley Higgensport Augusta and Dover Ky remaining steady after days of extreme levels.
Alderman L. H.
