Old Glory origin and history recounted from a ship captain’s tale

A Kansas City Journal item notes the claim that the term Old Glory came from Captain William Driver of the bark Charles Doggett in 1851 when a 19 by 38 foot flag was presented to him. Driver later moved to Nashville and the flag was kept, sheltered, and finally hoisted over the capitol by the Sixth Ohio during the Civil War. The first Old Glory was later given to the Salem Essex Institute. A separate anecdote recalls Camp Meeting John Allen’s sharp wit about the devil’s grandmother during a visit to Lewiston.
