Americus in 1849 a changing town and a friend remembered
In 1849 Americus had only three stores led by Granberry & Rawson, Wm. Mims, and Robert McCay with small stocks. The first corn shellers appeared in 1851. Today only the Joiner Nicholson building remains from 1849 as other streets and churches expanded. The narrator recalls J. J. Granberry, a trusted Americus merchant and friend, whose life and character symbolize the town’s early civic fabric.
