Smuggling lanes and a haunted tale in Talbot county

The Griffin News reports on Whitemarsh Church in Talbot county near Oxford with lore of a border village called The Hole to the Wall and smugglers offshore. It recalls 17th century church links, a female seminary building now county almshouse, and a 1711 rector’s wife allegedly buried alive and later saved from burial. A 1884 Republican prophecy is noted as weather delays its 1883 election prediction.

Reelects 78 year old Jarrett clerk of court in Baltimore

A. L. Jarrett of Baltimore, age 78, has been clerk of the court since 1840 and was just reelected for six years. He recounts a Jackson era incident when a Virginia delegation pressed for a favored appointee, and the President declined, saying he would not appoint under pressure.
