Senate votes against tariff bill and conference approves consular fund
Washington dispatch reports the Senate accepted the conference report on the consular and diplomatic appropriation bill while voting 70 to 23 against the tariff bill. Key votes included Allen Mitchell Squire Teller and Stewart opposing the tariff, with St Faulkner and Pugh in its favor. A separate note mentions Count Morris Balla of the French legation injured by a runaway horse. The House Democrats protest Lodge election bill rulings and retaliate by objecting to unanimous consent, pausing business until minority rights are safeguarded. Late updates say conferees on the silver bill reached a tentative agreement for 4,500,000 ounces monthly.
