Johnson and Walter Wade face joint charges and will appear at the next regular term of Sumter County court. The proceeding will be overseen by Judge Lit aronference with Clerk John.
A new bank named Ouwell Bank will be established in Ellaville with Lee G. Mericous as a leading figure. The bank plans a building on property formerly occupied by the Guano and Trevhone companies and predicts strong Brent-backed success due to existing financial connections. Ellaville will gain a second bank as the former Western Georgia branch is sold to form the Ellaville Bank.
Atlanta reports Evangelist John W Ham of Chicago predicts nations born again politically amid war will be born again spiritually after hostilities end. He notes France’s religious shift in three years and suggests America’s entry may revive old-time religion, with Billy Sunday slated for Atlanta revival next winter.
Savannah dispatch reports looming sugar price relief as the government plans October 1 control over refining and distribution. refiners to be paid about 7 12 cents per pound raw state, with wholesalers and retailers outlining fixed margins and a possible 1 2 cent per pound savings for households. Authorities foresee licensing refiners and price stabilization to curb hoarding and speculative spikes.

Fifty Columbus Rotarians will visit Americus this afternoon and dine at six at the Hotel Windsor. The Columbus delegation will be met by Frank Lanier Will Jones W E Taylor and P A Fennimere who will escort them into the city. The Americus party went to Ellaville to await the visitors. The aim is to develop closer trade relations between Columbus and Americus with a reciprocal visit likely by Americus Chamber of Commerce members.
Two boys who score highest in a practical farming exam will win free trips to the Southeastern Fair in Atlanta. Transportation lodging and expenses provided. Exam Saturday at 10 a.m. in Supt McMaths office, courthouse. Open to boys age 15 to 18. Up to ten questions on practical agriculture. Conducted by the county school superintendent and the county farm demonstrator.
The American Bankers association opens a week long session in Atlantic City on September 24. War financing methods and war conditions dominate the program. County officers seized four automobiles near Baxley containing 1 050 pints and 50 quarts of whisky. Three men escaped. occupants were arrested. The group, said to be from Tutnall and Toombs counties, had just returned from Jacksonville. The haul is one of Appling County’s largest since Prohibition enforcement began.
The Times-Recorder appeals for $180 to support two aged veterans in Americus Sumter county. One is 90 with a wife and sister. the other 77 with seven war wounds and a widow. In Tifton Georgia on September 19 Mrs. J E Carter was struck by a single shotgun blast in the left thigh during a night wakeful event. The husband mistook his wife for an intruder and fired. Medical aid was summoned and her condition remained critical but potentially recoverable.
Copenhagen dispatch from Bergen reports two German submarines sunk by British warships. London casualty figures for the past week ending yesterday show 1,800 dead and 23,000 wounded or missing.
