Pittsburg May 31 The Children’s hospital at Pittsburg was destroyed by fire today. More than a hundred young patients most crippled were moved to Magee Maternity hospital nearby. No lives reported lost. Three firefighters injured when the roof collapsed and two lay unconscious. police were overcome by formaldehyde fumes.
In Rome on May 31 Joe Lowman Sherman Hicks Calvin Crider and George Reeves union moulders formerly with Rome Stove and Range Works now on strike were served summons to appear before Judge Blair in Marietta to show cause why they should not be held in contempt for violating a restraining order against interfering with employees. Affidavits say they accosted Olive Bates after leaving the plant and one man motioned to draw a pistol while another picked up a rock and a third warned them about working at the plant.

Glynn Superior Court jurors acquitted Phi Comas former president of Baxley Banking Company Baxley after a brief jury deliberation. He left the courthouse to applause, a free man with supporters applauding his exoneration.
The Petrograd theater fire last night caused a panic rush for exits as flames spread from the stage to costumes and scenery. A safety curtain lowered too late. many audience members were killed and others injured though casualty numbers are not specified.
The annual session of rural carriers of the Third district met in Cordele. C. C. Wall of Ellaville was chosen president for the next year. T. W. Walton of Pinehurst is vice president, and J. C. Tatum of Richland is secretary treasurer. The 192% convention will be held in Ashburn on Memorial Day.
The May 31 convention in Milledgeville elected H. H. Tanner as president and E. G. Rhodes as vice president with Ed Anthony as secretary and treasurer. George Morris J A Stripling from Baldwin, S W Whitfield and H C Bryant from Jefferson, J K Burton of Taliaferro named to state convention.
George W. Garrett of Musella Ga was elected president of the Sixth District Rural Letter Carriers association at the annual convention in Macon yesterday. DeWitt McGee Moran Ga was chosen vice president and B T M Cauthen Milner Ga secretary and treasurer. Macon will host the next meeting. Macon May 31 Nearly forty candidates were initiated into the Shrine at a special ceremony held at Hussars armory at 4 29 o clock. About 200 Shrine members will depart Sunday for Washington D C to attend the Imperial council meeting with the patrol and band accompanying the delegates in full uniform. A Kiwanis note on language origins followed.
Wilson North Carolina May 31 Representative Claude Kitchin former minority leader in the lower house of Congress died at 6 14 this morning after a period of decline. A long serving member since 1901 his death ends a 22 year tenure in the House. He will be buried in Scotland Neck with funeral likely tomorrow.
Rome May 31 Taking issue with many people who say it is now too late to plant cotton W E Bowers former farm demonstration agent for Floyd county believes that cotton not yet planted has a much better chance of making a crop than that already in the ground that no other crop or series of crops can be relied upon at this time to supply the farmer with the money he must have and that planting cotton even though much later than desirable is less of a gamble than the effort to shift to something else a money crop.
Plunket School for Boys held graduation exercises at 11 o clock this morning. The program included prayer by Rev Robb White salutations by Samuel Warren Mays diploma presentation an address by Rev Campbell Symonds a song with words by James Groover and a valedictory by Thomas Andrishok. Officers named Thomas McIntosh Andrishok president William Hampton Jennings vice president Martin Milner Cooper secretary treasurer Samuel Warren Mays James Irving Groover William Hansell Jennings Robert Edward Cheshire Joseph Mabbett Neel Augustine Thomas Smythe Wright.
Mrs Frank P Harrold of Americus is nominated by the Georgia division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy for president general. The announcement, released by Mrs S H McKee, notes creation of new division members and urges support amid concerns over fire protection in the South. The item appears as a brief continuation on the last page.
Souther Field four miles east of Americus holds half a million dollars in buildings and material with no fire protection. Fire Chief McArthur and City Engineer Wheatley found the camp lacks water supply and operable equipment. Mayor Poole urged the War Department to provide adequate fire apparatus and water, with Americus firefighters ready to assist if approved.
A petition filed in Fulton Superior Court seeks a receivership over the Ku Klux Klan led by Wizard Evans and Emperor Simmons. The filing accuses mismanagement, collusion, and a $68,000 espionage funding scheme, with orders restraining funds and headquarters moves pending a June 9 hearing.
Pavo and Doerun, Georgia, schedule a co operative chicken sale on June 7 and 8 organized by the new Board of Trade. Pavo will load half a car of chickens on the 7th and Doerun the other half on the 8th as local citizens and business men rally to support the event.
Valdosta May 31 Prison Inspector Frank Monk of the state prison commission has just completed an inspection of Lowndes county convict camps. He reportedly found conditions not as good as they should be and his forthcoming report will not be as favorable as local officials may wish.
Mrs F R Phillips secretary of the Tallahassee chamber of commerce returned from the Dixie highway meeting in Chattanooga as the sole Florida delegate. The convention voted to retain the road from Thomasville to Tallahassee on the west branch into Florida for at least two years.
Thomasville reports a plentiful bean crop with gardens yielding well and markets stocked daily. Widespread availability leads to high demand as wagons bring in fresh beans from nearby farms.
Washington May 31. Dr James McBride Sterrett a widely known Episcopalian clergyman and university instructor shot and killed himself here today. He was 76 and rector of All Souls church which he founded. He taught ethics and philosophy at various institutions and once led the Society for Philosophical Inquiry.
A letter from Leroy Cleghorn to Mrs. W M Henry reports black workers in Warren near Cleveland unable to find steady steel mill jobs and leaving town in trains for other areas. He notes many say urban north life costs are high, with rents at a dollar a week and butter at 75 cents per pound. earnings up to 150 dollars monthly barely cover living costs.
The Georgia Bar Association holds its fortieth annual meeting May 31 to June 2 at the Hotel Tybee Tybee Island. Hundreds gather as Savannah anticipates crowded sessions with addresses by Justice W H Ellis and Justice S Price Gilbert among others.
A new daily bus line operates between Valdosta and Lake City Florida with round trips each day, expanding regional transportation.
New York May 31 United States Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the government need not prove alcoholic content or beverage fit in dry law cases where indictments charge liquor as whisky. The decision affects prosecutions relying on whisky designations and the government’s burden of proof in fit for beverage determinations.
Atlanta May 31 Judge T E Patterson of the Georgia Prison Commission declares the lash era ended as Georgia camps adjust to abolition under Governor Hardwick. He notes little trouble in camps and says counties seek more guards, with punishment often reduced to distinguishing good convicts from troublesome ones.
The Sumter Superior Court grand jury, now in recess, will meet again Wednesday, June 6. Officials say it has finished its business for presentation and will focus on motor vehicle law violations. Many motorists in Sumter and surrounding areas reportedly operate without license tags, and must file tag applications with Sheriff Harvey before the grand jury resumes to avoid bills.
