Memorial Day Observance Led by Harding in Arlington

President Harding, as principal speaker, led Memorial Day exercises at Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony featured the Grand Army of the Republic and the American Legion with other patriotic groups represented. A parade from the White House preceded the amphitheatre program.

New Orleans May 30 Clara Phillips will not be informed she must go directly to San Quentin to begin her murder sentence for Alberta Meadows. Officials said California court action denying her appeal could trigger trouble on the journey and officers fear an escape attempt en route. Railroad tickets direct to San Francisco were purchased. Public Service body fights Georgia steamer potato tariff. Interstate Commerce Commission hearing sought to suspend the tariff set to take effect June 15.

Harsh Punishment Favored by Army Officer in Orica

In Tientsin and Orica a U S Army major urges foreign intervention to quell banditry in China. The Associated Press reports he wrote a press letter from Tientsin, while another item notes a Georgia grand jury probing license tag violations and potential indictments. Railroad Revenue Loadings On Increase In May

Revenue freight for the week ended May 12 reached 974,521 cars, the highest weekly total since 1922 and about 4 percent under the peak. Compared with the same week last year, volume rose by 207,437 cars, and 223,345 more than in 1921. The week shows gains over 1918 1919 and 1920 as well, with a 13,502 car rise over the preceding week.

John Copeland was arrested on a warrant from W. P. Hunt of Cedartown and jailed. Hunt alleges Copeland stole his truck found abandoned near the Copeland home on the Cedartown road.

Clara Phillips began the final leg of her journey from Honduras to California at noon today bound for San Quentin to serve a indeterminate sentence of ten years to life for the murder of Mrs Alberta Meadows in Los Angeles last year.

Decoration Day Observance At Andersonville Draws Crowd

About one hundred white attendees plus Grand Army of the Republic members from Fitzgerald gathered at Andersonville for National Decoration Day. Thirteen thousand graves were decorated with a tiny flag at each headstone. The event saw six hundred African Americans present, with E. Whitman delivering the chief address. Lincoln's Gettysburg Address was read by Mrs. L. V. Rainer.

Brunswick, May 80. W N Gramiling returns from Cumberland Island where he bought three eight room houses and plans moving them to St Simon between the lighthouse and the pier. Capt C J Anderson holds the contract to transport the houses across the sound.

Boy Scouts Build Hut At McMaths Mill Site

Troop 2 of the Boy Scouts under R P Ewing have roughing in a new scout shack at McMaths Mill. Logs cut and hauled by the scouts, Lions Club members will help finish the hut. John Council Named Cotton Association Director

Atlanta May 30 Appointment of J M Council of Americus as a director of the Georgia Co operative association from the state at large to succeed A M Wilkins of Comer was announced Tuesday by J L Brown commissioner of agriculture. Mr Wilkins served as a director from the state at large until he was recently elected a district director. Under the rules the State Department of Agriculture the State College of Agriculture and the State Bureau of Markets may name one state director each on the board.

Fire at gas plant causes fifty dollar damage

Jim Walker, a negro employee at the South Georgia Public Utilities gas plant, was badly burned today when he pulled a ping in a meter releasing confined gas to explode. He was burned mainly on hands and face but will recover. Manager Ewing estimated plant damage at about $50, insured. Fire department responded to Box 14 alert and aided extinguishing.

Brunswick May 30 W N Gramling who retires as city manager June 1 has been awarded the contract by Glynn county commissioners to make a new and comprehensive map of St Simon Island and will begin work in the next few days.

Lightning Kills Three Children in Miller County

Albany May 30 reports reaching here say three siblings of Thomas Lewis were struck by lightning and killed near their Miller County home. A fourth child was seriously shocked but expected to recover. The parents were away at the time, leaving the children in a neighbor’s care.

Americus Man Killed by Train at Richland

W M Easterlin of Americus Seaboard Air Line trainman was killed at Richland when he fell under moving cars at the coal chute near the Richland depot. The 50 year old veteran, flagman for switching, died instantly as the local train between Americus and Montgomery proceeded.

Waycross records a busy week with police on high alert as Recorder Jerome Crawley logs a long session at City Hall Tuesday. Defendants were tried and sentenced with fines and forfeited bonds totaling 1095 dollars.

Summerlin severely injured at Americus plant

James Summerlin a lineman for South Georgia Public Utilities Co. was seriously hurt at the Americus Lighting Co. plant while repairing equipment. A heavy piece of electrical apparatus struck him from the pole, breaking two ribs and puncturing a lung. He was taken to Americus Sumter County Hospital in serious condition with pneumonia risk.

First Americus Zone Peaches Shipped Destined for Major Cities

The Americus area sent its first peach shipments passing through here last night en route from Putnam to Macon and Atlanta. Six crates traveled via the Columbus branch of the Central, then transferred to the main line. Express shipments are expected to grow rapidly with a carload shipment planned within ten days.

Municipal Pool Open This Week At Americas Playground

Arrangements have been made to reopen the municipal pool at Americas Playground Thursday Friday and Saturday this week. Hours are 8 to 7 on Thursday and Friday and Saturday 5 am to noon and 2 to 7 pm. Washington May 30 Fifteen Georgia pupils receive awards from the Highway Education Board after the national safety campaign. Ernestine Anthony of Ashby street school Atlanta wins first honors earning a gold medal and fifteen dollar prize. Elizabeth Woolfolk of Fort Valley schools ranks second earning ten dollar prize and silver medal. Thirteen others receive bronze medals and five dollar checks.
