Mrs Edith Rockefeller McCormick will request court action to stop the marriage of her daughter Mathilde to Swiss equestrian Max Oser. The statement is to be presented in Chicago on May 31 as reported by Associated Press.
In Americus, Wade Monroe, an African American, faced murder charges and the jury reported a mistrial after a long deliberation. The court discharged them with an 8-4 division over conflicting testimony. Earlier, Thomas J Hurley alias J L Bartlett was convicted of larceny from a house, sentenced to 13 years with a misdemeanor recommendation. the watch stolen from Sam Coney at Windsor Hotel was found in a Savannah pawnshop. RobertLawrence was convicted of liquor offenses and given sentences of 12 months or six months plus fines.
Jimmie Murphy of Los Angeles won the 500 mile race with a record 5h17m30.79s averaging 94.48 mph, breaking Ralph De Palma's 1915 mark. Harry Hartz placed second and Eddie Hearne third, with De Palma fourth and Ora Haibe fifth. Murphy earned about $35,000. Hartz about $10,000. He led from start to finish, stopping only to change tires and refuel.

Chicago May 21 The Railway Labor Board plans to order wage reductions for shopmen this week despite protests from labor members. The minority decision will accompany the majority order, which is expected to add another 50 million to the common labor cut announced last Sunday. Additional rulings on clerks telegraphers and other groups will follow.
The Times-Recorder reports the season's first cotton bloom from Georgia sent in by C S Pryor a prominent farmer near Sumter county Lee county Pryor noted his 400 acres of cotton knee high and looking fine with no comments beyond that observation.
Waycross May 31 The first cotton boll of the season was brought in by A H Hinesman negro county agent. The boll was found in the field of Warren J Jenkens a colored farmer near Hebardville. No boll weevil has appeared, calcium arsenate solution being used Several cotton blooms were also shown by Hinesman.
Milwaukee May 31 Thirteen balloons tugged at their moorings ready to get away at 3:30 in the afternoon for the thirteenth national balloon race. The event will decide the three entries of the United States for the international contests in Switzerland this August.
Hinkle says he notified the mayor early in the week of his plan to go Friday and faults the mayor for not informing other members. Mayor Dimon declined to comment on Hinkle charges, citing the official commissioners’ statement from last Saturday.
The McCumber soldier bonus plan was favorably reported by the senate finance committee by nine votes to four. The bill’s effective date shifted from October 1 to January 1, 1923 after Senator Walsh explained it would take six months to set up the bonus machinery.
Major Roy C. Geiger of the Marine Corps piloted a D H C 4 from Quantico Virginia to Pensacola Florida covering about 1000 miles at an average 110 miles an hour with two stops. He carried Sergeant John Belcher and fifty pounds of baggage and landed in Pensacola in under nine hours of flying time. Experts in Washington say the time and speed are the fastest on record between Quantico and Pensacola and may establish a world speed record for that distance.
The Careful Crossing Campaign runs June 1 to September 30 backed by the American Railway Association and major safety groups to cut fatalities at railroad crossings. Officials cite 1907 deaths at 1791 and 5077 injuries, with autos involved in about 76 percent of 1920 crossing crashes.
In Washington on May 31 the charges against Secretary Hoover by Senator Watson of Georgia prompted a heated exchange with Senator Lenroot of Wisconsin. Vice President Coolidge admonished Watson for language violations as Lenroot presented Hoover’s denial.
Atlanta voters upheld the old city charter over the councilman Edgar Watkins plan in a May 31 election. Totals show 7,209 for the present charter and 6,077 for Watkins. Old charter carried most wards while Watkins charter led in wards four seven eight nine, with overall turnout 13,286.
In Forsyth May 31 Prof J T Henry of Ellaville has been chosen superintendent of Forsyth public schools. A nineTE years teaching experience and degrees from Trinity College and Vanderbilt University accompany his appointment. He will move his family to Forsyth soon. F M Hunter retires as Forsyth high school superintendent and will teach at Mercer University summer school in Donaldsonville.
The nationwide elimination of crossings is deemed impossible with 251,939 crossings and only 899 removed in a year at 350000 each, totaling 12.5 billion. Railroads pledge cooperation to keep crossings safe, warn drivers, and station flagmen. Safety campaigns cut employe deaths from 4354 in 1907 to 2478 in 1920, urging motorists to slow at crossings. Locally Central of Georgia and Seaboard join the effort.
Secretary Hoover assumed responsibility for setting a reasonable price on spot coal during the ongoing coal strike. He told a conference of union and nonunion operators that any agreement to fix prices would be illegal and urged operators to agree on a district by district reasonable price.
Seven automobile bandits stopped three men in an auto at Long Island City and robbed a $15,000 payroll belonging to H. L. Mallinson, a New York silk dealer, on May 31.
S L Pearson of Richland, local Watkins agent, was telegrammed to say he won the first prize of $300 for Georgia for the best business performance during a set period. The award highlights sales effort by regional agents.
