Four young children witnessed the murder of C. A. Hunter, a Fargo farmer near Valdosta, by Sandy Armstrong, a Black man. The assailant fled into nearby woods as a deputized posse closed in on the suspect following the attack witnessed by the farmer's wife and children Sunday afternoon.
The Lyrian Hall Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution held its May meeting at Mrs. E D Dimmock's College Hill home. Officers were all re-elected: Wadley regent, Dimmock vice regent, Wright recording secretary, Parker corresponding secretary, McKnight treasurer, Carswell registrar, Parker historian, H H as parliamentarian, Singleton chaplain, Crawley custodian of books. A paper on Colonial Spots of Savannah and Revolutionary Soldiers' Graves in Ware County was read, and Mrs Minor's address to the Continental Congress was read by Mrs Dar Lott.
Americus Kiwanians are well represented at the Kiwanis International convention in Atlanta. Dr. Carl W. Minor and Bradley Hogg lead the official delegation, with many members joining for the four day session. Twenty five from Americus expected. Georgia delegation focuses on deaf and dumb children, Demostration by Dr. M. M. Stapler involves five to six patients from Miami and Alabama.
Rev. W. H. Wrighton, formerly of Valdosta and now pastor in Princeton West Virginia, preached on the Shaking of the Nations. He denounced lawlessness and called on the Ku Klux Klan to discard masks or quit claiming to be 100 percent Americans.
May 28 Floyd County prepares for the Coates De Journette breach of promise case in federal district court before Judge Samuel Hart Sibley. Helen A. Coates sues James F. De Journette for 50000 alleging he promised to marry and then failed to keep his word. Letters claimed by the defense to exist draw statewide attention amid anticipated testimony.
May term of Sumter Superior Court opened with Judge Z A Littlejohn presiding and Jule Felton as solicitor general. He urged jurors to study minor statutes and home training, arguing majority divorces stem from family neglect and not new laws. He warned laws alone won t curb crime, citing liquor, concealed weapons and gambling as core risk factors. Continued on Page Two.
The remains of John F Currie who died Saturday night in Jacksonville were interred Sunday afternoon at Oak Grove cemetery. Rev Milo H Massey officiated with pallbearers E H Lipford J T Atkins H F Comer L Y Arnold W A Sanborn and G W Walters. Surviving are his widow two daughters Mrs E W Deavours of Americus and Mrs E A Brown of Jacksonville and a son L H Currie of Dublin along with brothers and sisters. He was 63 and a Baptist and active in Odd Fellows fraternal circles.
Heavy rains reduced attendance at Jackson street tent meetings but many still gathered under the tent to hear Evangelist A. B. Lipscomb of Nashville. The First Christian church joined in worship and services will run daily at 8 pm with the theme Monday evening focusing on Future Recognition.
Waycross May 26. J L Marqueen 20 and George Edwards 24 are jailed in Ware County on whiskey charges connected to a raid on alleged run runners along the Dixie Highway. A car said to contain illicit liquor was captured by officers.

Waycross GA May 28 The Waycross school system announces Wednesday’s closing exercises at the high school under Superintendent A G Miller. Grammar grade exams start today as senior and junior high rehearsals continue for morning and evening commencements. Junior high at 10 30 am and senior high at 8 30 pm. Promotions set for Thursday with pupils moving up a grade.
May 28 to June 2 forecast from the Weather Bureau shows scattered thunder showers with temperatures near normal across the South Atlantic and East Gulf states.
Dublin May 28 The Associated Press reports that a note addressed by Eamon De Valera to all ranks in the Republican army urging immediate cessation of armed activity was taken by Free State authorities from the captured leader. The note says further sacrifices now would be in vain and continuing the struggle would harm national interests. It adds laying aside arms now is an exalted act of patriotism equal to taking them up.
L D Ranew, a prominent Sumter county farmer from the LaCrosse area, died at 6 oclock this morning from a heart attack while at breakfast. Miss Mary Ranew witnessed the seizure. Funeral from the family home at 3 pm Tuesday, Rev James B Lawrence presiding. Surviving: sister Mary, nephew C W Ranew, and several nieces. Ranew had suffered heart trouble for years but was not considered critical.
Hundreds visited the Seal's Mill site on Dawson road to view the ruined dam. The dam on mill creek failed Saturday night due to a rapid rise, flooding the mill pond and destroying the structure. Property owned by Eugene Salter valued at over a thousand dollars. the dam will be rebuilt in concrete. The break occurred after midnight when flood gates could not be raised, releasing water and scattering fish.
A recently appointed Valdosta Charter Commission will meet at the Chamber of Commerce next Monday at four o clock. The session is described as important and all committee members are urged to attend.
Senator William J. Harris spoke to farmers in a filled courtroom after the grand jury organized for the term. He touted a farm bloc, noted fertilizer and experimental station funding, and claimed high influence on federal appropriations to aid Southern agriculture.
Sumter county tax collector I B Small ordered by Comptroller General William A Wright to enforce special taxes on hotels cafes and lunch counters. The tax, recently upheld as constitutional by the Georgia Supreme Court, is assessed on a sliding scale based on the city's population.
Pelham Business and Professional Women's club will sponsor an exhibition of the town's valuable industries at the Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs national convention in Portland Oregon. The event runs June 9 to 13 and Pelham manufacturers and business houses were invited to participate to ensure a creditable display.
New York Central and six other major roads announce higher pay scales for thousands of workers. The New York Central adds 1.6 million dollars annually for about 20,000 employees. Baltimore & Ohio, Rutland, Pennsylvania, Great Northern, Nashville Chattanooga St Louis, and Chicago and Alton report increases across various crafts from 2 to 7.5 cents per hour, with Great Northern introducing a seasonal summer raise. Maintenance of way staff across Chicago and Albany totaling 2,500 receive raises, costing about 10,000 dollars annually.
E W Rowland and B L Naylor of Americus recount a Sunday drive to Unadilla where washed out bridges forced detours. They report widespread flood damage from excessive rains across Dooly and nearby Sumter counties with corn dwarfed and cotton stunted and fertilizer washed away, risking replanting and a poor fall harvest.
Sparks May 28. A program of special interest has been prepared for the Valdosta district conference of the Methodist church convening in Sparks this week. All churches in the district will be represented by pastors and lay delegates, and Sparks plans a basket dinner on the grounds on the second and last day.

In Derbyshire England a funeral attracted about three thousand mourners extending roughly one mile in procession as officials noted the scale and community sorrow.
Disorder unfolds in Dortmund amid strikes and communist activity. Residents report terror in the streets as workers’ guards search passersby for firearms and valuables, with numerous injuries from ensuing clashes. Police and communists clash near a nearby mine where emissaries tried to disrupt pumping.
Verden dispatch reports seven killed and nine wounded since Saturday night as clashes erupt between civilians and volunteer police against communists in Bochum. Firemen and police hold out in fire headquarters with revolvers while communists are armed with rifles and organized.
Almost nine inches of rain fell in Americus during May, totaling 8.80 inches with 4.9 inches through Sunday and last night. Macon recorded 0.387 inches in 12 hours and 3.48 inches in the prior 24. Streams overflowed, rail lines washed out between Lilly and Byromville, delaying A. and A trains and disrupting service as crews worked to detour traffic.
