Frank Shockley a Negro is summoned to court over injuries from a head on collision on the Georgia railroad near Augusta. Allen Mingo a negro is dead and Engineer J S Bowden of Augusta is slightly hurt as a freight and a work train collide near Wheeler Station at 8 30 this morning. The main line was blocked for a time and blame has not yet been fixed.
Edward Doheny Jr. was directed by Justice Hirz of the District of Columbia Supreme Court to appear on May 16 to show cause why he should not be compelled to testify before the oil grand jury. He previously refused to answer, fearing self incrimination, prompting a court motion for a rule to compel testimony.
Amite La May 9 The death march began at 1155 with Deamore escorted by a priest then Roy Leona to the gallows. The double trap dropped them at 1201. The second execution followed at 1237 for Giglio Rini Leona Rocchio Deamore and Rini of New Orleans Chicago and Brooklyn in the bank killing tied to a bank robbery at Independence three years ago.
More than seventy five American Legion posts from Americus Columbus Macon and Albany gathered to establish a Locale Voiture la Societe des 40 Hommes de Chevaux in Rylander Hall Americus. The initiation used high explosive tests under Fort Benning authority with no accidents reported.
Evening prayer will be said at Calvary Church tonight at seven thirty P M in the evening with the service led by the church pastor and attended by parishioners seeking quiet reflection and communal faith.
Valdosta May 9 trade and collections with the Valdosta merchants have been good since the first of May. Warmer weather drew shoppers from all sections and stores displayed the latest designs with large sales. Millinery and dress making departments reported long hours as closing time neared.
Atlanta Ga May 9 Of a total of forty four persons killed in Atlanta during the first four months of 1924 twenty seven were killed in traffic accidents. During this period 608 persons were injured in the city. 489 of them from traffic accidents. The report compares with ten deaths and 215 injuries in the same period last year.
Thomasville firm completes patterns flasks and equipment for White Way posts for Tallahassee city project. Thompson reports an order for eighty posts with potential extra twenty to fifty for Florida Women's College campus. First posts cast last week and production to accelerate.
Evelyn Nesbit, divorced wife of Harry K Thaw, says she will not pursue further action to block Thaw from gaining freedom from a Philadelphia asylum. She stated the decision is final and has instructed her attorney William A Gray to take no action.
John S. Pratt special assistant attorney general who helped secure the indictment against Senator Wheeler presented documentary evidence to the senate committee. The material included a photo static copy of letters between Wheeler and Campbell Gaaron an oil promoter. Wheeler denied promising Campbell that he would straighten out Campbell’s oil development permits in Washington.
Thomas Harrold and Rev. James B. Lawrence reported from Savannah that Calvary church’s delegation saw a progressive prosperous year in the local congregation and similar conditions across the Diocese of Georgia as the Diocesan Convention wrapped up.
Moultrie May 8 A general meeting of the Moultrie chamber of Commerce will be held here in late May announced by W C Vereen president. More than 600 leading Moultrie business men and Col quitt farmers are expected to attend.
A pamphlet titled What Everybody Wants to Know About Alfred E. Smith will be circulated nationwide. It reviews the life, achievements, views, and ideas of the New York governor as he campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination. The first edition totals 25,000 copies and has been sent to Smith supporters in the East. later editions will reach the entire country.
Griffin May 9 The Exchange Club of Griffin was organized at a Hotel Griffin luncheon. The club aims to build Griffin and Spalding county. Lucian P Goodrich was elected president with H A Willey P M Cleveland E F Travis William H Beck Jr and J S Tyus as officers. Twenty five prominent business men joined for community improvement.
A tank at Kyle's Filling Station on upper First avenue in Columbus exploded, sparing the lives of several workers and bystanders. The blast caused hundreds of dollars in damages as tank fragments were hurled through the roof and across nearby property, with debris reaching 75 feet into the air. The tank operated at about 125 pounds pressure, used to inflate tires for customers.
Muscogee county grand jury returned a no bill after investigating J L O Hearn of near Columbus who had been held on a technical murder charge in the shooting of James Walter Ingram last Wednesday night Ingram reportedly tried to shoot O Hearn with an automatic pistol after boarding his truck at Masseys store two miles from Columbus O Hearns statement and witness testimony were corroborated by the record of the investigation
Berlin May 9 The executive committee of the German Socialist party voted to urge the government to hold a popular referendum on the Dawes Commission reparations report.
Walter Rylander was inducted as president of the Ameri cas Rotary club last night at a dinner in the Country club dining room. Present were most members, their wives, and invited guests. Past President John Sheffield received a silver pitcher and goblet. The board of directors were introduced and spoke briefly. Most of the program was devoted to committee announcements.
County Superintendent Sept Dupree announced that blanks for teacher examinations have been received and may be secured by application at his courthouse office. Under the new system grading will be done by the state department, with county authorities no longer approving exams. Examinations will be held August 2 under the new system.
At a May 9 meeting Judge J A Dorsey appointed group urged a regular probation officer for juvenile work in Spalding County. Mrs C J L Henderson reported progress under her supervision and temporary officer Weissinger gave a strong report on work with youthful delinquents.
In Covington Kentucky on May 9 the government closed its case against Congressman John W Langley and two co defendants on charges of conspiracy to defraud the government The accusations allege the trio conspired to illegally remove whisky from government licensed distilleries The U S attorney said the prosecution finished its evidence before noon and the defense will start presenting evidence in the afternoon session
In Grant Park Atlanta on May 9 a well-dressed middle aged man believed to be W Jacobs was found beneath an oak shadowing the old Confederate engine Lysol poisoning suspected as the cause. He was unconscious and died before aid arrived a Lysol bottle lay beside him a bank book in his pocket showed $700 deposited in the name of Mrs Ida Jacobs no address found.
On May 29 the Laurens county Sunday school Convention will meet May 29 at Jefferson Street Baptist church in Laurens for an all day session starting at 10 o clock. Every Sunday school in the association is urged to send delegates for a large representative gathering of Sunday school workers. The completed program will be announced soon with addresses from prominent workers in the field.
The American Railway Express Company funds remodeling of the Griffin express office into a brick veneer building near the depot. Manager T. R. White announces the project with building superintendent H. Mr Smith of Atlanta approving. Construction will begin soon after recent inspections by the executives.
Leslie, connected with the Georgia Alabama Power Co., had lights turned on Wednesday evening after the service was connected.
Sumter county farmers benefit from a Jersey Bull Association formed years ago and owning several calves available to farmer members. An especially fine calf owned by T. J. Holman on Route 2 near Leslie yields four gallons of milk daily with top quality, according to records kept by the owner. County agent George C. Marshall notes the calf’s record shows the advantage of starting purebred, with an emphasis on early breeding in America.
