Sumter County Weevil Campaign Aims 1.5 Million Gain

A Sumter County plan to boost the 1924 cotton crop by 10 000 bales and $1 500 000 through a county wide weevil extermination drive was outlined at the courthouse. J C Maness of the State Board of Entomology led discussions with Judge J A Hixon and a steering committee naming a county executive board to mobilize farmers merchants bankers and suppliers across nine militia districts.

Georgia Auto Thefts Reach Record Six Months

Atlanta led with 422 of the 825 automobiles reported stolen in Georgia in the six months ending April 1. About 265 were recovered and 109 thieves were convicted across nine southern states with an average sentence of two years. Six of 196 brought to trial were acquitted, and 76 alleged thieves await trial.

Thomas Gurr Dies Suddenly in Vienna

Thomas Gurr once lived in Americus and later settled in Atlanta. He died suddenly in Vienna on Friday, shocking Americus relatives. A brother of Mrs. Henry B. Mashburn, he was formerly an official at the Savannah Americus and Montgomery railroad and married Hattie Clark, a local teacher, who survives.

Seven Auto Bandits Rob Suburban Post Office

Seven automobile bandits held up the East Chicago Indiana Harbor post office at 7:30 AM and fled with four registered mail pouches. Five employees were threatened while three bandits entered with drawn guns and the companions grabbed the pouches.
