Atlanta May 8 Two bankers well known in the South were elected to offices in the Southern Society of New York at its Waldorf Astoria meeting for the coming year. Martin W. Senate clash over immigration bill fuels party rift

South Georgia tobacco reports show vigorous growth overall between Valdosta and the Florida line despite a harsh wind storm last week. Plants vary in size but all appear healthy with a week of good weather boosting growth. Worms have appeared in some fields and poison treatment is underway to curb pests early.

Georgia Leads South in Car Thefts, 1924 Six Months

Figures from the Automobile Underwriters' Detective Bureau show Georgia had 825 automobiles stolen and 850 recovered in the six months ending April 1, 1924, more than any Southern state. Ford models accounted for 35 percent of thefts and 41 percent of recoveries. Georgia convicted 109 thieves with an average sentence of two years plus. 75 await trial and six acquittals occurred.

Man Held Following Death Of Young Girl In Dalton

Virgil Barksdale of Dalton is jailed at Chatsworth after the death of Miss Owens also of Dalton. Her burned, partially clothed body was found at the burning home of R P Hufstetler in Chatsworth late Monday night. Barksdale was slightly burned in the fire, with origin unknown. Authorities say Hufstetler, a former Murray county legislator, and his family were not home. Barkesdale has three wives and several children and has given no satisfactory explanation for his presence with the woman.
