Six men to hang start journey to Amite. guard escorts

In New Orleans on May 17, six men sentenced to hang Friday were moved from parish prison to Amite, escorted by the national guard. Warden Bennyson awoke Roy Leona of Brooklyn who had stabbed himself five times. one wound penetrated the hung and is considered serious. Leona confessed no slaying of Dallas Clames.

Methodist Church Unifies With South—Ratif ication Passed

The general conference at Springfield Mass ratified unification of the Methodist Church with the Methodist Episcopal Church South amid applause. A vote of 842 to 18 supported the motion. In Nashville bishops await Southern church action as meetings discuss the program and a general conference is anticipated within a year to complete details.

DeLoach to Speak countywide on farming profits

Honor Names at Senior Chapel Honors

Wednesday chapel exercises announced scholastic honors for the senior class. J. T. Adkins Jr. earned the highest score and will be valedictorian at commencement June 5 at Rylander theater. Willa Sanborn and Cathrine Goodman share class orator and salutatorian honors. Florence Stevens and Florence Castleberry received honorable mention.

Macon Police Seek Missing Wife in Poisoning Case

Macon police search citywide for D. W. Welch 21 of 952 Oglethorpe street after he says his wife Mrs Welch tried to poison him with morphine sulphate in tea after a Sunday night quarrel. He bears a knife wound he says was inflicted by her and notes her trunk disappeared when he left to call police.

In Macon on May 7 Judge Henry A. Mathers issued an order of ne exeat against D W Welch as his wife Algie Welch filed divorce and alimony suit in Superior Court. The couple married August 25 1923 and separated May 4 1924 with the wife alleging cruel treatment Renitz and Stephens represent the plaintiff Temporary alimony hearing set for May 40 by Judge Mathews.

Swimming Season Opens Thursday at McMaths Mill and Myrtle Springs

The Americus and Sumter county swimming season opens Thursday afternoon with announcements by John F. McMath of McMaths Mill resort and J.KR. Perry who will run Myrtle Springs this summer. Both facilities have updated bath-house equipment and will offer free bathing at opening. Roads to Myrtle Springs and McMaths Mill are in good condition, with paving work continuing on the Plains Highway.

Gun Club Public Shoot Set For Friday Afternoon

The Americus Gun Club will stage a public shoot Friday afternoon on the club grounds at the Lee street road intersection with Elm avenue. Starting at 3 o clock, officials will tally scores as several targets are broken and invite the public to attend with a cordial welcome.

Earthquake Felt in Manila with Aftershocks

Manila May 17. A severe earthquake centered about 626 miles off the eastern Philippines coast was recorded at 12 10 this afternoon. Four aftershocks followed the main quake as residents reported shaking and light damage in some areas.

Coolidge Wins California Primary Over Johnson in State

Overnight returns from California’s presidential primary show Coolidge leading Johnson with 219,943 votes to 208,684 in 4618 of 6974 precincts. McAdoo has 78,033, and Democratic no preference 13,719. Fifty two of 58 counties represented.

Mrs Hobbs Injured in Montezuma Auto Wreck

In Montezuma on May 7 Mrs E N Hobbs of Oglethorpe sustained a broken leg when the automobile she rode in flipped over about five miles north of Montezuma. Her two small children and two grown sons Joe and Fred were unhurt. Fred, driving, lost control and the car ran into an embankment. Mrs Hobbs's limb was badly crushed and physicians feared amputation. The party had been returning from a day in Talbotton.

Cotton Farmers Warned on Weevil Danger by Experts

Washington May 7 The Department of Agriculture warns that farmers relying on January cold for relief will face serious boll weevil damage this year. Experts say hibernation is incomplete and sufficient weevils remain in almost all sections to threaten crops.

Fire at Whitfield's 312 Jefferson street occurred between 1 and 2 am and was extinguished with limited damage. Chief McArthur valued loss at 25,000 for building and about 1000 for stock. investigators suspect incendiary origin aimed at harming D. W. Whitfield, a respected local business owner.

Missing baby found near parents home in Philadelphia

Philadelphia May 7 Corinne Model a 10 week old infant stolen Monday was found this morning in a Philadelphia house in good condition. The infant was found near the home of her parents. The infant was identified by her father when police entered the house. A woman found with the baby is alleged to have confessed to the infant.
