Patrick pleads not guilty in Rice murder case

Albert T. Patrick pleaded not guilty to the murder of Texas millionaire William Marsh Rice when arraigned before Judge Cowling in general sessions. David L. Short and Morris Meyer faced forgery charges related to the case and also pleaded not guilty. All three were remanded to the Tombs with no bail application. The arraignments followed Judge Foster's prior ruling overruling a demurrer.

In Corbin Kentucky a deputy sheriff was killed and police chief mortally wounded during a scuffle as officers attempted to arrest Andy Cox. Cox shot Branham and Wilder before Wilder killed Cox.
