Nineteen Twenties Convention Snarl Puts Dawes On Ticket
The Republican National Convention in Cleveland chose Charles G. Dawes as running mate after Frank O Lowden declined the vice presidential nomination. The night session featured dramatic moves by Coolidge supporters as Lowden delegates seized control to promote Dawes despite his own reluctance. Dawes, born in Marietta Ohio, rose from law and business roles to national politics, later serving as Comptroller of the Currency and Budget director, with a long career in gas utilities and public service.
