Chicago July 5 reports detail a July Fourth barrage of fireworks explosions and related accidents nationwide. A score of deaths and over a hundred injuries occurred in major cities, with children among the fatalities. Pittsburg recorded six deaths from fireworks and auto accidents.
ATLANTA July 5. Rep Craig Arnold Lumpkin introduced a bill to repeal Georgia’s prohibition law, shifting enforcement of the Volstead Act to the federal government. He said dual laws cause conflict and spur federal efforts, noting rivalry between federal and county officers in whisky running, with sheriffs eager to seize confiscated cars.
Alderman J J Witt resigns as chair of the finance committee citing council disagreement over school tax policy. Mayor Poole accepts the resignation. E L Carswell named as successor and J W Harris Jr. added to the committee as Witt is relieved of duties.
Chicago July 5 consult with Dr William B Owen NEA president on money literacy as vital, arguing money sustains life and nations. He calls for new education focus beyond classical discipline, stressing English, sciences, reading real literature, and self-motivated learning for 85 percent entering business and trades.
Washington reports that the comptroller issued a formal call for statements from all national banks gauging their condition as of the close of business Saturday June 30.
Athens July 5 Savannah will host the 1924 Georgia division American Legion convention. The decision was unanimous at the session. Edgar B Dunlap of Gainesville was elected state commander succeeding Rodney Cohen of Augusta and was unopposed.
Fire discovered shortly after midnight destroyed the Wheatley estate barn on Hancock Avenue. Insurance of 400 dollars was carried on the building, which Chief McArthur said was formerly a Wheatley stable but used only for storage recently and contained little value. The barn was valued higher than the insurance.
Valdosta reports the death of W. E. Perry’s father, aged 60, at the family home in Iron City after a lengthy illness. Perry, a deputy United States clerk, rushed to Iron City upon learning of his father’s critical condition, but arrived too late.
Governor Walker urged the Georgia general assembly to consider multiple tax options including classification, stamp, income, luxury taxes and lower county tax rates. He called for real economy in government and repeal of the tax equalization law and favored shifting burden from real estate to intangible property and other values not on the tax books. He suggested adjournment timing to avoid extra expenses and possible later special sessions.
The Democratic executive committee declares a July 31 primary to select a mayor and councilmen. J. W. Callahan is running for a seat and is unopposed for another position in Bain Bridge.

The service was fast and accurate, with Americus Undertaking Company furnishing chairs and Nat LeMaster providing comfortable seating. The paper notes a four minute lag behind Montana ring exchanges and behind Shelby city reception, reflecting timely, precise coverage.
A Georgia conference of Black leaders adopts a communication to the General Assembly stating the Black race opposes migration of laborers to Northern states and arguing the remedy lies in white leadership. Bishop J. S. Flipper presided the event in Atlanta with W. A. Bell as secretary. about 100 supporters contributed to printing and distribution costs.
Chicago July 5. Mrs. William C. Martin of Dallas Texas is named chairwoman of the home and community committee of the American Farm Bureau Federation. She manages 6000 acres and 1200 acres, champions co operation, and alleges tenants share profits fairly for safer land income and better community facilities, including a library, recreation rooms, wash house, and canning kitchen.
A July telegram from Alabama African Americans to President Harding requests federal troops to safeguard R. R. Moton of Tuskegee Institute and negro surgeons at the Tuskegee Veterans' Hospital, amid racial tensions over black leadership at the federal hospital and public threats after a masked parade. The incident follows controversy over black officers running the hospital for World War II veterans.
City council will convene in regular session at 8 o'clock tonight to address routine matters and other items. Taxpayers with past due tax fines face collection actions, with the City Clerk Dudley Gatewood coordinating notices and urged to present explanations for duplications or errors to ensure proper entries and write-offs.
In early July in the northern Colquitt County area Sheriff Beard and Deputy Vick seized two moonshine stills and several gallons of beer. Three men Math Smith Enoch Organ and Louis Wright were arrested for violating the prohibition law. Bond was posted and cases will be examined by the monthly grand jury. Marshall C Arnold aided the officers in the raid and Sheriff Leard praised the cooperation in enforcing the dry statutes.
