Atlantic City reports wage talks as over a hundred negotiators from hard coal operators and miners meet to renew a wage agreement affecting 155,000 Pennsylvania workers. Hull denounces Harding remarks as misleading while observers see him pursuing a presidential path in his western tour.
Washington July 6 federal valuation of railroads questioned before the interstate commerce commission. Counsel for several railroads and state commissions participate as a brief for the national conference on valuation of American railways is filed. Hearings to run three days with a spokesman for the group expected to appear. Roads argue tentative valuations are too small in most cases. some state commissions contend valuations are too great.
Macon July 6 Junius H Bailey is now the postmaster after succeeding Emmett Small who had acted since the death of Billey Rudisill. No staff changes are anticipated and no alterations are planned.
At a Americus Baseball association meeting Bradley Fogg resigned as manager and Thos L Bell was elected temporarily. Fans pledged full support and a plan to raise 500 dollars monthly through 5 dollar subscriptions from 144 Americus fans to cover payrolls and expenses. Bell promised a first class brand of baseball if cash is raised.
Washington announces Professor John Merle Coulter head of the University of Chicago Botany Department has been named a member of the National Research Council Division of Biology and Agriculture for three years starting July 1 1923. The appointment comes from the National Academy of Sciences led by A Michelson. Coulter author of works in botany and former president of multiple scientific societies.
Hutchinson Kas July 6 The Fourth State Bank of Hutchinson was closed by state bank commissioner Carl J Peterson over an alleged shortage of 175 600 The commissioner placed responsibility on Walter Grundy former bank president whose present whereabouts are unknown to state officials
CALLS CIRCUIT FAST COLUMBUS July 6. Sergeant Bill Stewart, a local umpire visiting Columbus before returning to duty, says the South Georgia Baseball league is fast. He notes several former college stars are performing in the circuit.
Federal authorities in Chicago will inspect motion pictures showing Shelby Mont scenes before the Dempsey Gibbons fight on July 4. The films, which exclude actual fighting, are not considered prize fight pictures and may be allowed for exhibition. Initial reports of seizure were denied.
A noon roof fire at Rose Field home on New and College streets started when sparks from a kitchen stove set shingles alight. No damage reported. Earlier, Box 14 responded at 7 30 to Turpin garage on Lamar street where George B Turpin tried lighting gasoline, a hose end igniting and causing a brief thrill before extinguishment.
At a city council meeting the 8 mill school funding dispute resurfaces. Alderman Witt supports an 8 mill limit with council discretion later, and calls for a referendum on charter changes. The council directs a bill reflecting discretionary 8 mills next year and authorizes sending it to state representatives Pace Hines and Riley.
Tonight at eight o clock a meeting of all committees aiding the First Methodist church-building fund will be held in the courthouse. General committee members include Wille Marshall as chairman H B Mashburn F L Wootten H P Everett and H R Branch with other special committee members expected to attend after today’s appointment notice.
Georgians paid 278 248 in delinquent federal taxes in May, the highest state total in the nation, with 28 field deputies averaging 9 937 each, a national record for revenue collectors.
The predatory animal bureau of the U S Department of Agriculture and the chemical warfare service plan experiments to kill rattlesnakes using poisonous gases. Phosgene is first likely, with chlorine and mustard gas as alternatives, to be tested at Fort Sam Houston during the summer and later on in dens during cold weather. Major George M. Halloran directs the chemical warfare effort.
Rev. John M. Cutler calls for weekly building fund contributions. Susannah Wesley Sunday school class conducts a rummage sale at the store beside Americus Ice Cream factory starting at 10 AM, with Mrs. Roy Parker as chair leading members in the effort to boost funds. The class, a key church contributor, plans additional fund raising activities and frequent meetings to discuss methods.
Valdosta reports the Tobacco Growers Association has fixed August 2 as the opening date for the South Georgia tobacco market after a meeting with warehousemen in Asheville North Carolina. The decision follows negotiations between growers and warehouse operators.
Macon banks reported a substantial increase in business for the first six months of 1923, with debits totaling $31,400,111.87 more than the same period in 1922, according to the secretary of the clearing house.
Macon plans a large Labor Day celebration on September 8 with floats contracted by several unions for a morning parade. The Federation of Trades reports many athletic events will be part of the program.

O B Dowis was killed near Duluth in a swampy river area as brothers in Americus received a telegram noting the assassination. Dowis previously served as a deputy sheriff at Duluth and had prior run ins with lawless elements, including a past car shooting that damaged a steering wheel. Hub Dowis, a third baseman for Americus, left town to pursue details and will be away several days.
Leslie defeated Leesburg 8 to 3 with Cox pitching well and Hines driving in runs. Bolton had a single and a double while Mercer and Stovall contributed for Leesburg. Buena Vista visits Leslie Friday afternoon as the two teams clash again.
Several churches in Columbus have adopted resolutions through their memberships opposing the repeal of Georgia dry laws. They urge local members of the Georgia state legislature to oppose the legislation.

He prepared committee lists after House delays to expand committee slots. Carswell, a veteran, is slated to reveal appointments soon.
Columbus July 6 James W Smith local merchant recaptured three small boys caught attempting to burglarize his store and handed them to their parents. He reports the parents promised to ensure the boys go straight in the future.
Evening prayer will be said in Calvary church tonight at 8 o clock. Residents are invited to attend the service and join in the candle lighting.
Atlanta July 6 Commissioner of Agriculture Brown accused political enemies of using criticism to advance their aims. He denied Representative Bannister’s claim that the federal government severed relations with Georgia agriculture. Brown said the department now cooperates with federal agencies in five separate lines of agricultural work in the state.

Mrs. EK Hay became the first woman admitted to the bar in the immediate Thomasville area after passing her exam last week before Judge W. E. Thomas of the Superior Court Southern circuit. The milestone marks a historic entry for the region's legal profession.
The Standard training school of the Methodist Episcopal Church South in this district will be held here August 15 through 18. The program includes sermons and talks by Dr. Comer M. Woodward, Darias Tex Rev. J. M. Cutler Americus and Rev. J. P. Dell Dublin.

The Savannah city council will act on a proposed ordinance to restrict taxi stand occupancy from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. The measure aims to regulate when stands may be used by taxicabs.
