Athens bright with flags as the Department of Georgia American Legion opens its fourth annual convention. More than a thousand Legionnaires attend the first business session at 11 AM and send a telegram of greeting to former President Woodrow Wilson calling him a comrade in arms of World War I veterans.
Atlanta July 83 The legislative Big Eight are eight heads of key committees to direct major bills in both branches. Carswell and Neill head presiding bodies. Culpepper and Lankford lead appropriations. Ennis and Mayson head ways and means. Pace acts as rules vice chairman. Pace backs Senate power in late sessions. The eight men are seasoned, capable leaders guiding the calendar and vital legislation today.
The Georgia General Assembly completed organization for the 1923 session appointing House and Senate committees. J. H. Ennis of Baldwin heads the House Ways and Means and T. S. Mason of the Thirtieth District chairs the Senate Finance Committee. Other chairs include Smith of Forty-Fifth Agriculture and Smith of Thirty-Fifth Constitutional Amendments in the Senate, Beauchamp Education and Public Schools, Coates Highways, Latimer Public Property in the Senate, Culpepper Appropriations, Haddock General Agriculture No. 1, Guess in the House Judiciary, and Braay Insurance. A House resolution seeks an investigation of the state highway commission bookkeeping amid prior criticisms.
Thompson a lineman for the South Georgia Public Utilities Co was badly hurt Monday while erecting a transmission line between Americus and Cordele near Cobb in the county lower part. A pike pole slipped a heavy steel tower pole fell trapping him but a steel cross arm saved his life. He was brought to Americus hospital with painful cuts and bruises not deemed serious.
Reported bog in the National Highway near Hahira in Lowndes County has trapped multiple cars over the past day or two, with locations noted a mile or so from Hahira toward Valdosta.
Frank Squinchy Martin presents the Americas baseball club with an entire office building formerly at Church and Jackson streets in Georgia. The structure, once too small for his business, now serves as the players’ office space. Paul Wootten assisted in transferring the building for club use.
The Times-Recorder will not publish Wednesday afternoon July 4 and all staff will enjoy a full holiday. A special leased wire will bring in ringside returns from the Dempsey Gibbons fight at Shelby. Guests may listen free of charge with ample seating for the anticipated crowd.
Atlanta July 3 Senator Stephen Pace of the 13th district outlines his bill to establish a state auditing department with a state auditor and three examiners The measure would require annual and special audits of every state department and institution receiving treasury funds and calls for accounting forms records and procedures to track state money It stresses cooperation with the Budget Commission and legislative appropriations committees amid funds totaling about 10 000 000 yearly
Washington July 3 nearly every thick bed of sandstone in the great Cretaceous system of the West seems to contain oil at some locality but exact numbers regions and identities are not yet determined The report seeks to show continuity of beds named differently in various areas aiding study and drilling for example a Dakota bed is also known as Muddy sand and overlies two other potentially oil bearing sandstone beds.
Bruce McLeod of McRae, sentenced to five to twenty years for manslaughter in the Marcia Henderson firing, has arrived in Atlanta and will begin serving his prison term after the transfer to state custody.
B. E. Watts, after six months with The Times-Recorder, gets a leave of absence to go to Jesup Georgia to finalize the purchase of an interest in the Jesup Sentinel. R. D. McQueen co-owns. Watts will stay in Jesup temporarily before returning to Americus where his mother Mrs. T. K. Watts remains. Watts is a veteran newspaper man and may not return to Americus.
Grocery and dry goods stores in Americus will close all day Wednesday for the Fourth of July as per an agreement circulated locally. Signed by Easom & Martin and others, the pact notes a half holiday Thursday. rural residents are urged to plan accordingly to avoid disappointment.
A S M Rae McCrea, who went to Waycross months ago to manage a Rogers advertising grocery, is visiting his old home for several days. He reports Waycross prosperity is steady due to weekly and monthly payrolls from local industries and plans to return there this week.
On July 3 the first melons of the season appeared in Albany markets, selling for one dollar each. Three melons were brought in by C. Raymond and Doeran, who displayed the fruit and noted brisk sale as market stalls opened.
Japanese newspapers report Tokyo will approach the United States and Great Britain to press a three way agreement enforcing the Washington naval limitations. The move aims to avoid awaiting Paris ratification and reflects Tokyo authorities taking initiative without French approval.
William Caye Jr a premier Americus golfer earned a rare distinction by holing out from 108 yards on No 5 Saturday in a foursome with Carr Glover Terry Lumpkin and Howell Elam. He becomes the first Americus player to join the Hole in One club and has received widespread congratulations.
Hamilton Yancey Jr engaged in life insurance in Americus was welcomed into the Americus Rotary Club at a lunch in the Windsor hotel. George Riley Georgia legislator spoke on taxation noting many bills and a likely passage creating biennial sessions. W W Dykes discussed plans for continued mosquito elimination campaign by county commissioners.
Charles Clements, once gravely ill with pneumonia in Cleveland, Ohio, regained consciousness last night and is expected to recover with convalescence ahead. His brother Johnny Clements travels to Cleveland to be at his bedside as W. H. Simmons reports the update for The Times-Recorder.
Great Falls Mont July. The world heavyweight title bout between Jack Dempsey and Tommy Gibbons is restored and will be fought tomorrow as scheduled. Mayor J B Lane and promoter Jack Kearns confirmed the arrangement after a lengthy morning conference.
The Georgia House passed a joint resolution urging Congress to amend the 1920 transportation act. They claim a Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling constrains Interstate Commerce Commission authority and seeks state power to set intra state rates. The resolution requests the General Assembly to urge federal change.
The Friendship Baptist association encampment began Monday at Myrtle Springs with over 200 attending. The program includes B Y P U and Sunday school classes, stewardship talks, and a series of lectures led by Rev. P A Duncan of Cordele and Dr Rufus Weaver of Mercer University.
Thomas Higginbotham former whipping boss at Putnam Lumber testified the act was his duty to whip Tabert and that he gave eight lashes. The state alleges Tabert died from excessive whipping while prosecutors say 50 to 119 lashes were applied. Judge says night sessions possible as defense lists 103 witnesses.
Tomorrow afternoon a flag handicap match will be played on the links of the Americas Golf Club starting at 2 30. The course includes all eighteen holes and Americus golfers may discuss the state championship at Idle Hour Country Club Macon July 19 26 21.
Funeral services were held in Cordele for G. I. Bush who was killed at J. C. Hattaway sawmill near Herod, five miles from Americus. He was struck in the neck by a timber while opening cable and died instantly. Surviving are his widow and five children. a Cordele resident, he had recently joined the lumber camp.
Atlanta reports the United States Department of Agriculture data showing sugar cane cultivation in Louisiana increased by more than twelve thousand acres. The current average reaches about 231,700 acres versus 292,100 acres in the previous five years.
