The U S Department of Agriculture forecast the 1926 cotton crop at 11.41 million bales based on June 25 conditions at 69.9 percent of normal and 32.29 million acres planted. Georgia area was 3.922 million acres with crop condition at 56 percent of normal.
Allied nations face renewed reparations tensions as the Ruhr region again dominates the news. French and Belgian actions in Essen and surrounding towns escalate with troop movements and hostage measures. Frankfort reportedly cut off from unoccupied Germany amid ongoing diplomatic discussions in London Brussels and Paris.
Fortyt persons were injured when a two car train on the Niagra Falls high speed line of the International Railway Company derailed after an open switch at Tonawanda near the U S border. Both cars left the tracks with one overturned by the crash, many likely fatally hurt.
At a Saturday meeting of the Americas Playground Association officers were chosen for the coming year. Ralston Cargill was named president, S K McKee vice president, and E E Schneider secretary and treasurer. A municipal swimming pool bond commission was also elected with Cargill as chairman and J J Ansley and Mrs J H McKee as members, replacing Sam Heys. The group reported strong interest and solid finances, noting bonds retired and new bonds issued to extend dates.
Rev Roy F Davis president of the Georgia Farmers Union was removed from office by the executive committee citing undisclosed dual life spanning Texas and Georgia The committee elected J D Weaver of Dawson GA as the new president at a late session in the Central Hotel Macon on July 2
H C White of Macon has been named agent at Americus for the Central of Georgia railroad arriving Sunday to assume duties. He succeeds George Anderson who has held the post since J E Hightower resigned years ago and notified the Southwestern division superintendent last week. Anderson has not announced future plans.
John T. Wootten was hurt while delivering vegetables when a frightened mule dragged his light wagon, injuring his big toe. The injury was painful but not serious, and he plans to resume daily deliveries, using the episode as a lesson for the mule to stand when entering town.
Harrold and Lanier arrive in Southampton England after traveling from New York on the Majestic. They attend convemience ment exercises at Oxford where Frank W Harrold will graduate as a Rhodes scholar from Georgia. The travelers plan to visit multiple continental countries over several weeks while in Europe.
In Columbus on July 2 John JT Elliott a former railroad conductor was shot dead on a secluded driveway. Elliott's widow and Lawrence Bass an auto mechanic are detained. Bass claims the wife and another woman were present when Elliott appeared with a pistol.
The First Methodist church in Americus will lay its cornerstone on August 2 with a Southern Methodist bishop present. John W. Shiver H P Everett and Joe M Bryan lead the program with a 12 woman dinner committee and several dedicated public groups coordinating grounds publicity and meals. The event aims to be a red letter day with merchants given a half holiday and Masons handling the cornerstone ceremony after a sermon by a visiting bishop.
A large fire at the P Lorillard Tobacco company plant in Richmond Virginia on Sunday night prompted a general alarm at eight o clock. Fire crews rushed to the scene as firefighters battled the blaze of undetermined origin threatening the plant's destruction.
The Times-Recorder signed a contract with the Associated Press to provide full unabridged returns for the big fight. A special wire will relay the AP report to the office and an announcer will call the results to the crowd. Nat LeMaster of the Americus Undertaking Co offers seats, with a ladies section and provisions for Negroes to hear the returns at no charge.
The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized new commodity rates for all freight to and from Southeast points effective July 1, despite protests from the Southern Traffic League and others who urged an investigation. In Tours France fifteen people were injured in the Grand Prix when a car failed to negotiate a turn, hitting a fence and a tree as spectators suffered severe injuries including skull fractures in three children and a broken leg in a woman.
Jim Johnson, former owner of the Pelham Barber Shop on Lamar Street, returns to Americus to make his home again after years in Montezuma. He will be connected with Mr. Pelham in the old shop and invites friends to visit.
Maj James A Fort and J L Suttles delegates from John B Mathis Post American Legion No 2 left this morning for Athens to attend the annual Georgia Legion convention. R L Crawford post commander accompanies as district committeeman in official capacity. Delegates elected by the post here were unable to go.
Two time bombs were found at the Mayence tunnel entrance, one exploded causing minor tunnel damage. A French artillery officer withdrew the fuse from the second bomb in time to prevent an blast. French authorities imposed traffic restrictions and penalties, with city officials to be held accountable for the sabotage attempt at Mayence.
W. L. Johnson, a leading and popular market man, has accepted a cutter role for Nash Market in Rogers store on Forsyth street. He has begun duties, with many friends following him. Johnson has long been connected with the city’s top markets earning a strong reputation. For the past year he worked at West End Market on Church street run by W. H. Feagin.
Miss Christine Whitfield, daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Thomas of Dublin Georgia, married Dr Dorsey Butler Olver of Savannah in Savannah on June 21. The Americus note says Mr Olver spent his youth there and has many friends in Dublin, where he was in the drug business.
Atlanta July 2 Congressman William D Upshaw announces he will not enter the next senatorial race citing unfinished work in the house of representatives He says he has no personal inclination to antagonize Senator William J Blarris and that while someday he would like to represent Georgia in the senate now is not the time
