Funeral for U S Senator Sewell Held in Camden

The funeral of late United States Senator William Joyce Sewell was held at his Camden mansion with Bishop Scarborough leading services. Government and state troops guarded the procession to Harleigh Cemetery where 13 gun salutes were fired at the grave. Honorary pallbearers included War Secretary Root and Governors Voorhees and Murphy. Distinguish ed men from New Jersey and nearby states attended.

Outlaw Porter Surrenders in Crawford and Russell County

Uriah Porter, accused of killing Joseph Fincher and terrorizing Crawford and Russell county, surrendered to Deputy Sheriff John L. Moon in Opelika. Porter, escorted by friend Mr. Davis, claimed fear of a mob drove the surrender and that accounts of his deeds were exaggerated. He was taken to the Lee county jail with rejoicing reported in the region. Elsewhere, Mamie Laporte of Boston was robbed on a Boston and Albany sleeping car of 1600 worth of jewelry near Albany.
