London December 12 The Labor party executive board issued a communique stating that if invited to form a government the parliamentary party should immediately accept full responsibility of running the country without compromising itself with any coalition arrangement.
Senator Walter F. George of Georgia prepares an amendment to cut the $5 per ton tariff on sulphate of ammonia and seeks broader relief on fertilizer costs. He cites President Coolidge urging cheaper fertilizers and notes foreign imports persist despite duties, urging immediate relief and wider tariff reductions for farm demands. Georgia lawmakers Harris and Crisp also push farm cost relief measures.
Mrs. Calvin Coolidge will pay a forfeit after a joke about solitaire on the White House gold piano. Frank Hall of Sanbornville New Hampshire travels to Washington to learn the game from the president’s wife in the East Room.
President Coolidge's message to Congress pleased conservatives though not a clarion call. The progressive bloc, holding balance between parties, moved to block Republicans from electing a speaker and then helped amend rules to suit progressives.
Private advices from San Antonio report General Sanchez leading a growing rebel force from Vera Cruz toward Mexico City. Estimated 25 000 well armed men, many veterans of earlier campaigns, reportedly join the movement.
Washington December 12 American officials welcomed the possible participation of U S experts on the reparations commission committees while the U S government cannot appoint members directly The White House said President Coolidge and his advisers would view with favor the acceptance of American experts on the two committees and this step could hasten legislative action enabling Americans to join representatives of other powers on the commission.
W T Anderson editor of the Macon Telegraph and highway commissioner said he would not run for governor in 1924. Speaking at a Macon Rotary Club meeting at the Windsor he urged better personal hygiene as dengue fever and other health issues plagued Georgia. Cobb Milner led the program as attendees heard Mr. Anderson praise progress against mosquitoes while noting ongoing battles in Sumter and other counties.
Warren Neal the state highway engineer arrives in Americus for a conference with citizens at the Chamber of Commerce to discuss keeping the district highway offices in the city. Senator Pace, busy with Atlanta duties, cannot attend. a group of local leaders and residents are invited to meet him.
The Aggie basketball team will play Richland on the Aggie court Thursday afternoon at 3 30 o clock. The public is cordially invited to attend.
Governor Clifford M. Walker urged a compromise on tax reform in a joint session, asking the House to drop the word net from the Lankford income tax bill and urging the Senate to drop its ad valorem credit stance. The session ended with a failed Senate resolution to back a compromise and a conference committee appointed on the Ennis revenue bill.
Georgia House of Representatives failed to pass Representative Ellis’s income tax bill for a second time, 96 to 61, lacking the required 104 votes. A 3 percent tax rate was proposed, and an amendment to submit the measure to voters in November 1924 was defeated 74 to 51. Several members said they would support the bill with a referendum, but oppose it without the people’s say.
In Oglethorpe on December 12 special report states the Allison Warehouse and 700 bales of cotton stored there were consumed by a late Tuesday fire. Two hundred bales may belong to Sheely Brothers and 500 to local farmers. The warehouse is owned by Mrs Artie Merrit. The Bank of Oglethorpe Macon County Citizen Printing Co and the Masonic hall were threatened. Fire departments from Oglethorpe and Montezuma helped prevent further spread.
J A Coburn of Coburns Minstrels denounces rumors affecting his reputation in The Times Recorder report. He denies rheumatism claims, cites a broken leg from a train incident, and notes months of confinement before a return to mobility with crutches.
The Republican national committee adopted a resolution restoring nearly full Southern representation at the national convention. Cleveland was chosen as host city with the convention set for June 10. Georgia gains 18 delegates instead of 17 under the new apportionment.
At the Republican National Committee opening session on December 1 in Washington, Cleveland emerged as the favored site for the 1924 GOP convention. Des Moines and San Francisco presented invitations and also proposed hosting the 1928 gathering, signaling the expected outcome.

Washington Dec 12 A Republican insurgent Senator La Follette led in the stalled election for Interstate Commerce Committee chairman as three ballots failed to break the deadlock and the Senate adjourned for the day.
A local Christmas fund grows as children begin contributing dimes and quarters to help provide goodies for poorer kids in Americus. The appeal notes slow start but hopeful signs, with the goal of inviting Old Santa to visit houses and spread holiday cheer in about two weeks.
