Woman gets life in Waycross court for slaying of man

Nora Duren found guilty of murder in Waycross for shooting Ira James on August 14 after she testified that James had made an improper proposal and assaulted her. Four small children were with her as she fired the fatal shot behind the store counter. The jury recommended life imprisonment, and she appeared calm as relatives surrounded her.

Sumter County Cotton Ginning Dips Sharply in 1923

Sumter county ginning through December 1 totaled 12 103 bales including halves, down from 21 758 bales for the same period in 1922, per reports to W P Person from the Bureau of Census at Washington.

Woman deserts, tries to drink poison in despondent act

In Atlanta on December 13, Bettie Ingram, 18, attempted to swallow acid at her 26 West Alexander street home after her husband left for Decatur a week earlier. A friend, G. E. McCollum, wrested the bottle away, burning his hand. Ingram was treated for burns and survived. Visitors from Cobb and Columbus dined in Americus, including Eunice Cocke and C A Wade.

Americus Hog Sale Planned on Tuesday

County Demonstrator to endeavor to get good prices requests many animals. There will be a hog sale at the Americus pens next Tuesday Dec 18 and another in Leslie Wednesday Dec 19 announced by George O Marshall Sumer county farm demonstration agent. Hog price has been through out the county 6 30 to 6 6 cents but we are one that the present crop will bring more than that. Efforts will be made to secure the highest possible price for the commodities placed on the markets in the county. We are hoping that a number of hog raisers will offer stock on the markets.

Reports from Mexico City indicate a decisive clash between Sanchez forces and loyalist troops near Vera Cruz, with government units concentrating in the area. W M McConnell of Vicksburg is charged with illegal slaughter of ducks by air. Federal game warden J E Perry says McConnell used an airplane to locate a flock and swooped down to strike at them, causing extensive bird deaths. Stockholders of the International Cotton Mills ratified a merger plan linking mills in Lowell Lisbon and Yarmouth with Lockwood Green and company mills in Pelzer Tucapanu Hogansville and La Grange.
