Boston reports fear for the hospital ship Solace carrying sick and wounded from Santiago after leaving Cuba. Sightings of wreckage off Fire Island spark rumors of storm, disaster, or inaction, with no official word as relatives seek news.
President McKinley and his party journeyed from Washington to Somerset Pennsylvania by the Pennsylvania Railroad to visit Abner McKinley. Secretary Alger held talks on Camp Wikoff while Director Cortelyou and Mrs McKinley accompanied the group. Arrival at Harrisburg brought a cordial welcome and a brief impromptu reception. Matthews condition improves slowly as doctors report recognition but limited movement.
A nine sleeper train brought 152 soldiers from the First Second and Fifth Missouri volunteer regiments to St. Louis. Many are gravely ill and were sent to local hospitals for care while others departed for home. The contingent includes 21 men from the First regiment stationed in St. Louis.
Three regiments depart Camp Thomas for Knoxville as Southern railway boosts transport capacity. Second Missouri Fifth Missouri and Fifth Ohio move under General Breckinridge with First corps to be evacuated in two days. Plans for Third corps unsettled due to Huntsville water shortages and possible switch to Anniston Alabama. Mustering out Second Nebraska near completion with Omaha departure likely Friday. Medical units report strong care and Sisters of Charity arrive to aid hospital work.
Tennessee candidates plan a statewide joint canvass following a Democratic Republican agreement. The schedule opens in Memphis then moves west to east and finally middle Tennessee for a total of 40 speeches.
Admiral Schley was greeted by cheers and a warm crowd at the navy department in Wasuixatoy as he met Acting Secretary Allen. Clerks and officers filled corridors, and ladies kissed him as he passed to the ice for Captain Crowninshield. He plans to sail for Porto Rico next Wednesday with the Porto Rican military commission aboard the Seneca.
At Layta Aug 27 Governor Atkinson recommends war department allow Georgia First Second and Third regiments to choose whether to stay in service. If allowed those wishing to remain form one regiment with officers named by Atkinson, others to be mustered out as a solution to military troubles.
