Washington officials weigh Merritt's move amid commission's Manila decision. Some officials foresee a Paris trip to brief allies, while others keep him in Manila to guide post decision days. Dewey remains in Manila after cable talks, deemed more valuable there.
In Curcaco on August 29 IL T Higgins, longtime cashier for the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad treasurer's office, died from burns after an explosion in a vapor bath device. Higgins, age 59, had worked for the Island Railroad for 18 years and is survived by a widow and two children.
Wingate Ind Aug 29 Ex Governor Claude Matthews dies at Mc Barry homestead after a paralytic stroke. He uttered yea before death, funeral planned at Hazel Bluff farm near Clinton. Born Dec 14 1845 in Bath Kentucky he served in Indiana legislature and as secretary of state and governor, sought the 1896 Democratic presidential nomination.
Preston Minnesota report says M R Todd the bank cashier who wrecked the Fillmore county bank confessed theft of all deposits to bondsman M T Grattan who warned of lynching as Todd spoke from his cell He claimed the entire funds were taken and disposed of. The tale ties Todd to a wider scheme with unclear links to partners and debt.
In New York, Aug 20, Sen Cushman E Davis argues for a large regular army and a strong navy to project American power globally. He warns against hesitation, calls for rapid military buildup, and suggests future policy will hinge on establishing the United States as a premier naval and land force while defending territorial gains and asserting influence in the Pacific.
Two more deaths from typhoid fever at the division hospital in San Francisco are reported Privates F H Rodibaugh of Company H Seventh California and Bert A Metcalf of Company L Fourteenth Infantry. Metcalf to be buried in Cleveland Ohio. The hospital records show over 800 names with hundreds still ill amid strict sanitary orders at Camp Merritt. The piece also notes shifts in military officer appointments and presidential travel details.
