Massive blaze at the Plaza hotel in Brooklyn ends with the roof and a wall giving way. Two firemen are dead and forty seven people, many firemen, are injured as ambulances rush to the scene and rescue crews battle the flames under floodlights. Estimates place 25 to 50 firefighters in the building when collapse occurred.
Americus Rotarians finalize preparations for the inter city Rotary meet to be held August 30 with District Governor Ken Guernsey among the honored guests. Lovelace Eve chairs the general committee with Cobb Milner and Sam Coney aiding, as details promise a program full of features for all attendees.
Five Americans and one Frenchman die when a motor sightseeing bus veers over a parapet on the Nice Evian highway, plunging 100 feet into a river. One or more others are seriously injured, with 18 of the 22 passengers American including Isaac Strayhorn of Durham North Carolina and Mrs Hocker of Miami Florida.
Ameicus Rotarians anticipate unusual September activities as The Rotary Messenger lists four key programs. On September 12 Frank Harrold chairs the meeting marking the club's fifth anniversary with Harrold the first president. Cyrus Crumbly a colored youth from Macon Georgia says a colored man lured him out for a night of pleasure then robbed him at Third and De Lancey streets station Philadelphia. Police arrested Fred Shaw on Reese Street near Pine after Crumbly told how he traveled here to earn carfare back to Georgia.
In Gloucester, mass rumors say pirates boarded the Nova Scotia schooner Js Scott Hankenson near Rockport and shot Captain Cook. Police report twenty thousand dollars in cash stolen. In Savannah a third whisky raid defendant, Charles C Jordan, faces jury trial this afternoon. In Seattle the USS Seattle went ashore in Puget Sound amid fog. no danger expected, naval vessels stand by.
President Coolidge said he would adopt a reasonable attitude toward clemency for war time violators. He acknowledged some prisoners are serving just punishment, while others may deserve consideration for relief. The remarks framed a tempered approach amid ongoing wartime justice discussions.
M O Dunning of Atlanta chief of staff for the Georgia Klan announces a 1500 reward for the arrest and conviction of those guilty of flogging in Macon. Local rewards total 3600, exclusive of governor offers. No new developments in the arrest of the three Hudson brothers and no additional disorders reported.
Five people were injured, one seriously, when a Ford touring car collided with a truck at Smarts, Ga. The injured were rushed to Macon hospital. a Savannah passenger en route to Indian Springs, and Harrold Pritchett of Forsyth was aboard the truck. Mrs. Sara Stone suffered the most severe injuries and was critically ill.
Manila August 21. Manuel Quezon former president of the Philippines senate accuses Mayor Rodriguez of being an ex convict. Quezon says Rodriguez served one year in prison for abducting a woman and is charged with conspiring in the murder of American soldiers. Quezon resigned from the senate over differences with Governor General Wood.
Capt. and Mrs. A. S. Peters of Lakeland Florida will arrive September 1 to lead the Americus Salvation Army post. Capt. Luella Knox and Capt. Guest will relocate to Athens Georgia on August 29 to run that post and oversee uplift work in Clarke county. Both pairs come as veteran uplift workers, and residents here regret their departure.
Five masked bandits looted mail and express cars of a Missouri Kansas Texas train near Osaka just after midnight taking twenty registered mail packages. Fireman Towers is hospitalized with a probable fractured skull after a pistol blow while engineer and two mail clerks were beaten. Train was en route Oklahoma City to Kansas City. passengers slept through disturbance.
Workmen unload material for a $12,000 school at Andersonville. Excavation and foundation work proceed as brick deliveries arrive, with one lot rejected by trustees. Plans by the state board of education include daylight illumination, electric lights, modern water facilities, and full screening for a handsome structure in Sumter County, Georgia.
Mrs Viola Danron departed Monday for Lumpkin for a visit of several days, planning no set return date and expected to be away briefly as she visits relatives and local friends in the area.
Atlanta August 21 Rep Charles E Stewart of Atkinson County disputes reports he will run for commissioner of agriculture. A telegram from Stewart says the idea is absurd and he has never considered entering the race, requesting correction of the unfounded report.
Mrs James Ki Myers of Thalean district is critically ill at Wise sanitarium in Plains with grave fears for recovery. Known widely in the community she is the wife of the tax collector for the district and her illness concerns hundreds of friends across the area.
More than 100 Columbus youngsters, mainly children from poor families, are enjoying a two weeks outing at the girl scout camp at Eelbeck under the Family Welfare Bureau.
Evans faced pressure at a Albany meeting as Albany manager Donald Starr pushed for Evans to umpire here claiming fan reaction would suffer otherwise. Starr refused replacements, insisting Evans be the official, and Bell warned attendance could be affected by the umpire choice.
Mrs J R Bicking wife of Rev J R Bicking died today after fright from the parsonage blaze Saturday night in PoComo City Maryland. Two men held on arson charges and four more arrests expected as investigators proceed.
A diving and swimming meet will be held August 30 at the Playground pool with one representative from each of seven Rotary clubs. Americus does not compete. Prizes are provided for each boy aged 15 to 18, with events in 50 and 200 yard free style, back stroke, underwater distance, and multiple dives.

Atlanta August 21 Governor Walker said he will call an extraordinary session of the general assembly to start between November 15 and December 1. The move follows the House vote 92 to 89 to table the Lankford income tax measure and its amendments, killing tax reform prospects for this session. He will limit the agenda to taxation reform and repeal of the tax equalization law. The tabling vote was led by Representative Stewart of Atkinson before a late morning session.
