Clerks in Carl H Skinner store faced gunmen while an accomplice ransacked display cases. Bandits fled with diamonds and jewelry in the daytime robbery. Police searched for three suspects connected to the Boston burglary spree.
In Boston on August 20 two men robbed Carl J. Skinner, a diamond merchant, stealing jewelry and cases valued at about 150000. One suspect waited in a car while two others covered three clerks with revolvers and another seized the merchandise from the safe area.
A mass meeting in Walhalla South Carolina gathered citizens supportive of a national park to be built in the southern Appalachians. Louis B Magin of Tallulah Park, president of the Southern Appalachian National Park Association, was the principal speaker.
About fifty members of John D. Mathis Post No. 2 gathered at the legion hall for a social and business session. State Commander J. R. Fitzpatrick and State Adjutant McMullen spoke on regional progress and 1925 goals, with emphasis on aiding disabled veterans and a 15,000-member target for Georgia. A defense act endorsement was approved, and committees were named to plan actions for September 12. Cecil W. Walters presided.
Six jurors who convicted J I Alexander of assault and battery in Macon City Court signed a petition seeking executive clemency. Alexander, jailed by Judge Holmes Johnson of Gray City Court, faces six months on the chain gang with five months remittable by a $500 fine over the flogging incident involving Ollie Perry, a Tindallville storekeeper.

A gasoline fire at J A Feagle's Rylander building on Lamar street caused about 500 dollars in damage early today. The blaze affected mainly plant machinery and clothing from smoke. It started in a machine used to purify gasoline and was nearly extinguished by chemical extinguishers loaned by the Americus Automobile Company before the fire department arrived. Fire Chief McArthur halted water application upon arrival.
The quarterly meeting scheduled for tonight at First Methodist church has been postponed. Reasons for the postponement will be given by the pastor at prayer services tonight.
In Grand Island a mass meeting formed the Independent Party as Robert M La Follette and Burton K Wheeler were placed in nomination for the presidency with electors pledged to support them in Nebraska if they carry the state in November. The event marks the launch of a new political grouping.
The Central of Georgia railroad reports 298 peach cars for the just ended shipping season at Americus. H C White, Americus agent, says 229 cars originated at Americus and 64 cars were received from connections. Included are peaches from Seaboard Air Line. Baltimore August 20 Native American stock in the United States is increasing and projections suggest the population could reach 274,000 by 2100. Dr Raymond Pearl of Johns Hopkins reports from 1915 to 1921 birth and death data showing native births climbed from parity with deaths in 1915 to 142 births per 100 deaths by 1921 while foreign born births remained higher but showed a decline.
Miss Lucy Page Gastona founder of the National Anti Cigarette League died in a Chicago hospital. She was a noted anti tobacco advocate and public speaker who campaigned for cigarette restrictions. Her death ends a prominent reform effort spanning decades.
Burlington Vermont and New Market Tennessee reports state William Moyers, a Klan organizer and alleged instigator of the St. Marys cathedral robbery, was arrested in New Market Tennessee. He is under a $5,000 bond after authorities requested by Vermont placed him in custody.
On August 20 three unmasked bandits robbed the Corn Exchange Bank in Kansas City and escaped with about $15,000. The crime details include the bank name and total taken, with no injuries reported.
In Los Angeles on August 20, Kid McCoy’s attorneys began laying the groundwork for an insanity defense as part of his upcoming legal proceedings.
W T McMath left Tuesday afternoon for Perry Florida after word that his brother W H McMath was critically ill. Nora McMath accompanied him by car. No details of prior illness were provided.
The grand jury indicted ex-pugilist Kid McCoy for the murder of Mrs Theresa W Mors on August 12 in the city. He also faces charges of assault with intent to commit murder and four counts of robbery. A separate indictment lists three assault with intent to murder counts.

In Hadde Mass on Monday Judge Daniel J. Cavan sentenced eight Ku Klux Klan members and five anti klansmen to 30 days each for disturbing the peace following a July 31 riot after a Klan meeting in Groverland. All appealed as authorities warned that more serious charges could follow due to gunfire from a truck after the clash.
John Bowen, Americas agent for the Seaboard Air Line Railway, announced July on time performance as 96.4 percent across all passenger trains. Some divisions reached as high as 99.8 percent, with officials and employees praised for ongoing improvements and aim to have every train operate on time.
Charles G. Dawes accepted the 1924 Republican vice presidential nomination before several thousand at his Evanston lawn gathering.
