William Jennings Bryan was injured when the automobile carrying him from Tuscola to Mattoon overturned in Terre Haute Indiana. He suffered severe bruises but was able to deliver a lecture in Mattoon last night despite the accident.
In Columbia Tennessee on August 21, Linda Dawson testified at a preliminary hearing for W Lee Grant charged with murdering his wife on August 11. She said Grant asked her to deliver notes to his illicit lover Mrs Jane Durham Kish, detailing his plans and funds, while Grant claims death by self-administered strychnine.
In Dresden Saxony a ban removes religious hymns including Silent Night Holy Night and patriotic airs such as The Watch on the Rhine from school songbooks. The move follows pressure on authorities by the Communist faction amid a climate of political tension.

Frank Foster, 35, charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, was continued until August 24 in the Chicago court of domestic relations. Nellie Brown, 17, of Rome, Ga., said Foster lured her to his apartment a week ago and detained her until she escaped on Sunday.

Valdosta August 21 County officials set a county wide tax levy of thirteen and a half mills up one from last year to fund schools and county operations. One and a half mills support schools countywide while five mills fund outside Valdosta and Ha HB district. The extra levy aids school buildings and programs after budget pressures. The plan includes permanent county improvements. thirty day notice will follow with exact allocations.
A turbine driven schooner named Charles Hyde, loaded with 1,600 bags of liquor, was towed up the Savannah river and anchored at the municipal wharf after seizure outside the limit. Authorities believe the registry papers are counterfeit.
Rural white schools in Sumter county will start fall term on September 1 with all pupils expected to enroll promptly. Negro schools will not all open that day to help with the cotton harvest, with many set to begin the third Monday in September.
Chicago Aug 21 The Workers' Party led by William Z Foster for president and Benjamin Gitlow for vice president plans a nationwide tour by twelve speakers to reach workers and farmers. The party aims to place candidates on ballots where possible, with Illinois governor candidate William F Dunn. The national office will issue mass leaflets and run campaigns against Republicans Democrats and the La Follette progressive faction.
