The final tabulation of Sumter county tax digest by tax receiver George D. Jones shows total taxable values at 9,359,778, down from last year’s 9,687,592. The 27th district including Americus accounts for the largest drop, with 108,557 less than the prior year. whites report 8,575,264 and negroes 764,514 in values.
A severe cloudburst in northern Utah caused extensive damage with losses estimated around $100000. Twelve deaths were reported, including four in Farmington and five Boy Scouts swept away near Farmington. Eight corpses were found near Salt Lake and Ogden as communications were crippled by the storm.
A mystery death report states an unidentified Negro man was found dead on the Central of Georgia railroad tracks near Muckalee Creek on Sunday. The body showed a skull wound suggesting a gunshot, and a coroner’s inquest by Ed Jenkins could not determine the manner of death.
In Sandersville on August 14 local business interests and citizens protested a proposed intrastate freight rate rise. A 20 member committee was selected to appear before the railroad commission in Atlanta to stall the advance.
Sheriff Harvey returns from Orlando with P A Ryan, a 23 year old white man accused of stealing a car owned by Frank Timmerman of Plains. Ryan says he bought the car from J N Troutman for 45 dollars cash and a promised 200 plus later, with Claude Kelley linked to the purchase. He claims he does not know Kelley or Troutman. The balance due on the car was discussed as part of the case.
George C. Marshall and Henry P. Everett of the Chamber of Commerce report strong enthusiasm for the Sumter county fair in Huntington and Leslie. J. L. Johnson named exhibit chair in Huntington, committees organized, and women’s group authorized to assemble community support with local workers meeting in Concord, Shiloh, and planned sessions across several towns August 15 to 17.
National guardsmen seized control of Tulsa's municipal government after mob violence. Governor Walton ordered military rule following Nathan Hantman's reported flogging by a band last Friday. Police involvement alleged. broader military investigations may extend to other counties.

MACON August 14 W Henry Jones prominent in business and social circles was found dead in bed this morning after a period of ill health Following a recent return from John Hopkins Hospital Baltimore he was at his office Monday and played golf Monday afternoon He is survived by his wife daughter mother and sister with relatives in Asheville North Carolina at the time of reports.
A mine explosion in Kemmerer Wyoming trapped 150 miners. The report provides no additional details of the tragedy.
Waycross August 14 The laying of seven miles of macadam surfacing on the Dixie Highway seven miles south of this city is expected to begin in the next few weeks. The contract has been let to Sam Finley of Atlanta. The project calls for about $80,000.
Berlin dispatch reports the general strike in Berlin has ended as Communists call it off, restoring transportation lines and reopening services after the resistance movement demanded liberation for imprisoned Germans in an inaugural address.
Twelve killed and over eighty wounded as demonstrators attempt to storm police headquarters in Aix la Chapelle to free prisoners from yesterday’s food protests. The assailants, idle workers, faced grenades sabers and revolvers. Belgian troops did not intervene.
The East Pelham baseball club finished its season with 12 wins and 3 losses over 15 games. It defeated Tifton, Remerton, and Moultrie among others, signaling a solid campaign for the local club.

Washington Aug 14 President Coolidge faced the threatened suspension of work in the anthracite coal fields at today's cabinet meeting but action seemed unlikely before tomorrow's coal commission meeting in New York. S. D. Warriner for the operators and John L. Lewis for the miners said they would meet the commission.
Washington reports that President Coolidge’s new administration has approved plans to supply substitutes to relieve any fuel shortage if the anthracite coal strike proceeds. The White House also says there is confidence no strike will occur.
Washington brief reports all cabinet members currently in Washington have agreed to remain with President Coolidge. The group states there is no need for an extra session of Congress for now.

Atlanta August 14 Governor Walker said he would direct Attorney General Napier to investigate gasoline prices in Georgia. He sees no reason for the present price and seeks a formal inquiry.
Atlanta Aug 14 The legislative joint committee investigating the State Highway Department fully exonerated the department from charges raised by McMichael and others. The report found the department economically and efficiently managed with no recommended changes and praised its efficiency and accomplishments. McMichael rejected the report and offered his own paper attacking Engineer Crossland.
