Lake City lynching case opens with Bryan speech

In Marleton on April 19 the Lake City lynching trial opened. Government counsel Hon. J. P. K. Bryan delivered a lengthy, eloquent address denouncing the conspirators and asserting the desecration of Washington's birth day as the country’s Sabbath was violated. Defense will follow with Legare slated to speak. five speeches planned.

Burglar shot pal during failed hold up in New York

In a tenement hallway burglars attempted a robbery when a policeman interrupted the scene. One thief shot Charley Thom, 24, in the neck. Thom aided by his partner fled as the other burglar escaped. Thom claimed he fought a night watchman or iceman, not recognizing the officer. Thom’s father called him a “bad egg.” Meanwhile, U.S. postmasters were appointed in several states and a South Carolina regiment was mustered out at Camp MacKenzie.

Fifteen Americans Captured by Rebels in Luzon Ambush

Navy dispatch details the Yorktown rescue mission at Balier Luzon where 80 Spanish soldiers and several officers were surrounded by 400 insurgents. Strange Disappearance of Lieutenant Gilmore and 14 Men

Admiral Dewey was notified of the vanishings from the Yorktown near Baler, Luzon. Ensign Standley and a boat crew went ashore to meet Spaniards, heard distant volleys but saw no trace of the boat or crew. Yorktown sailed to Iloilo. a rebel line was found near Malolos with a brief skirmish but no losses. Brigadier General Charles King is ill and ordered home. relief and transport sailings arranged.

Filipinos Claim Capture of Large Lawton Force Near Manila

The Filipino European junta says General Lawton’s division was drawn into a trap near Binangonan, with 140 officers and men captured. Lawton reportedly retired to Manila after recall by Major General Otis as a Manila rising neared. Filippino reports also claim Zamboanga seizure and control of 7,000 Mauser rifles and Spanish gunboats, navigated up the Rio Grande.

Orphan Home Fire in Berne Kills Three Inmates

A blaze at the Berne orphans home in Adams County destroyed part of the German Mennonite run facility. Of 47 inmates, three girls ages 14, 15, and 2 perished, others were rescued after helpers carried them to safety. The fire reportedly started on the third floor and caused about 5000 dollars in damages.
