Valentine Ryan, a Second Louisiana private, says his regiment faced long abuse from officers during the eleven months of service. He reports planned action in New Orleans to publicize mistreatment and claims threats of a court martial for filing charges. The unit left Savgunsh and marches toward New Orleans with friction between enlisted men and officers.
In Washington April 18 United States representative on the Samoan commission Mr Bartlett Tripp met with Secretary Hay and Third Assistant Secretary Cridler then accompanied the secretary to the White House. He will receive final written instructions and be briefed on the presidents and Hay views. The three commissioners consider clerical support and a luncheon with Secretary Hay was held. Tripp departs for San Diego tomorrow as Eliot heads to New York and west.
A fragmentary old advertisement argues that marriage obstacles are overcome by Dr. Pierce’s patent remedies. It touts health impacts on wifehood, fertility, and maternity, claiming tonics restore nerves and ease babyhood, while warning against pushy dealers and urging honest sales.
In Hanvuspune on April 16 1899 Republican lawmakers from the Pennsylvania legislature met in the senate chamber to discuss uniting behind a candidate for U S senator. The gathering included anti Quay Republicans and former caucus adherents who considered backing B F Jones of Allegheny. Senate chair William Flynn announced no single candidate, while McGee urged voting for Jones. The group agreed to support Jones, with Jones connected to Jones and Laughlin in Pittsburgh and a longtime party figure.
Canton O April 18 The state rested in the murder trial of Mrs Anna E George for killed George D Saxton and the defense opened with its witness list. The defense hints at a temporary or emotional insanity plea induced by alleged wrongs. The cabinet announced major diplomatic changes. W. W. Rockhill resigns as minister to Greece and Arthur Sher Hardy of New Hampshire will replace him as minister to Persia. William P. Lord is named minister to Oregon and John N. Irwin of Iowa becomes minister to Portugal, succeeding Townsend and Storer in Madrid. In Camden, Lieutenant Blokely Morgan of the Olympia receives a sword from local citizens in a ceremony at the Ouachita club with Senator J. H. Berry attending.
