Dr J L LeBrince federal drainage expert urges citizens to tackle disease bearing mosquitos. He warns they control prosperity health and growth, and calls for an organized body of aggressive citizens to lead elimination efforts in the county. Continued on Page Two.
In Kalamazoo Michigan Reverend Father Charles Dillion pleaded guilty to the slaying of his superior Rev Father Henry O Neil rector of St Augustine s Catholic church. Judge Weimer sentenced the confessed killer to life imprisonment at hard labor in circuit court. The unprovoked killing occurred at the parish house during breakfast following alleged brow beating claims.
Representative Charles R Crisp returned to Washington to attend sessions of the foreign debt funding commission of which he is a member. He expects to be gone about two months, the stay to depend on progress in reaching agreements with foreign governments and formulating a general funding plan. He will miss some summer district time but will return to Americus as duties permit to gauge constituent views on general issues.
Eighteen Confederate veterans from Sumter and Schley counties, members of Sumter Camp No. 42, returned Saturday from a reunion in New Orleans. The group traveled over the Seaboard Air Line from Montgomery and described the visit as a great time. The party included Commander H. D. Watts and 16 others from Sumter and Schley counties.
Applications to discontinue Heardmont Oglesby and Pearl agencies on the Seaboard Air Line were filed by the American Railway Express Company with the Georgia Public Service Commission. The Georgia railroad also seeks to discontinue the Arnolds ville agency. Hearings are scheduled for May 17.
Three revival services were held Sunday at First Baptist Church by Dr William Rusell Owen at 9 30, 11 60 and 7 30 pm. The evening crowd was said to be the largest yet. He preached The Fassover Lamb from Exodus 12 13 and explained the significance of Jesus blood in salvation. The revival will continue this week at the same hours.
Fire crews responded to a 2 30 PM call on Jefferson Street where a house owned by J H Poole and Sons estate occupied by A M Guerry and W L Johnson burned heavily. Water and fire damage were extensive and the loss estimate was not yet available.
The American Debt Funding commission authorized Secretary of the Treasury Mellon to sign the debt funding agreement with Finland. The pact mirrors the recently concluded arrangement with Great Britain, officials said.
An adjourned Savannah Presbytery meeting is set for June 4 in Savannah, announced after a two day session here. Most of the time was spent receiving reports from various departments.
Los Angeles reports that Clara Phillips, condemned hammer murderer who escaped from Los Angeles jail on December 5 1922, has been located in San Salvador. Her apprehension is momentary expected. She escaped by sawing bars and leaving over the prison roof.
New York April 16. Harold Van Alsteain an acrobat who in January shot and killed his sweetheart Miss Marion McLaren of Philadelphia committed death by his own action today in the Tombs prison here. Van Alstein used his belt as a means to hang himself and death was due to strangulation.
L G Council, chairman of the board of stewards, publicly commended Rev J M Cutler for his work since arriving in Americus, highlighting a two week revival. A free will offering of 1250 was requested. subscriptions of 1305 were pledged. Over 100 new members joined the church, with many by letters and professions of faith. Epworth League planning a reorganization after a youth meeting at the courthouse. New members to be received April 29.
The Americus Negro Hospital on Wild Street near Cotton Avenue is ready to take patients. A public reception Tuesday will allow white visitors 2 to 4 pm with a committee from United Charities guiding tours, followed by a negro reception 7 to 9 pm led by local leaders. The brick building has 30 rooms, 24 for patients daily, plus offices, operating room, nurse quarters, and two multi bed wards. Two negro graduate nurses, Minnie Merton and Leah Hood, will staff, with plans to train more aides while upholding morals. Cost about 25000 dollars. facilities include dining, kitchen, gardens, and steam heating.
Mayor Poole acting for Recorder Hollia Fort presided over the morning docket. Bonds forfeited in three traffic ordinance violations and in a drunkenness case. Nat Jordan received a street sentence for fighting and disorderly conduct, while Ralph Bostwick’s case was dismissed.
In an Saturday morning arrest, Essie Perry Evans Perry and Will Shannon were stopped after an officer traded for whisky then brought the trio to town. Warrants led to fines of 60 dollars or eight months for whisky in their possession. Perry paid and was freed while the others delayed. The Perry car was seized by the sheriff amid condemnation proceedings.
Washington April 16 The grain futures trading act was declared valid and constitutional today by the Supreme Court This marked the second ruling on the act with the prior statute struck down as unconstitutional The Chicago Board of Trade challenged the validity of both acts reflecting ongoing legal debate over federal regulation of grain futures.
April 16 Waycross. An inquest is planned today over the body of Burrell Godwin who was shot and killed last night by Herbert Black in Pleasant Hill, a suburb. Black, under arrest, says the shooting was in self defense after Godwin threatened his life. The duel occurred in Black’s front yard amid previous family disputes.
Former Governor Bilbo of Mississippi reported to Lafayette county jail to serve a thirty day term for contempt of court. He pled guilty in federal court to contempt for failing to appear as a witness in a lawsuit filed by Miss Frances Birkenhead against Russell last fall and was fined $190.
The city council finance committee led by C. J. Witt met in Dr. J. Wade Chambliss office to review the meat slaughter proposal. Chambliss prepared figures showing native beef and hogs could save the city money versus shipped meat, with weekly slaughter and sale data and projected annual savings of about 33 thousand dollars.
Arthur DeVane was found not guilty by a Schley Superior Court jury in Ellaville after a brief trial on murder charges linked to a February lynching of Will Jones. Bennie DeVane and Henry Harvey had prior convictions or acquittals. others await trial as bail and custody details were noted.
Dr. Carl Minor of First Baptist extends an invitation to Kiwanis members and their wives to attend church services tonight at 7 30 with reserved seating.
Americus High School topped the Third District meet at Cuthbert, sending four placers to the June State Meet in Athens. Albert Cutler and Eleanor Ross won debating and music honors respectively, with Ann Heys and Lionel Stokes earning state-qualifying medals in music and declamation. Reynolds, Plains, and Cordele also posted top placings in spelling, essays, recitations, and athletics.
Four more aliens alleged to have been smuggled from Cuba were captured at Deerfield near Hers this morning while preparing to board a northbound train. Nineteen others were taken near the Palm Beach county line late last night. A former American detective in Havana is said to have arranged the smuggling for a large sum of money.
The N. B. Stewart home on South Lee Street in Americus has been sold to Lovelace Eve. The sale was announced this morning with the price not disclosed. The residence, in Americus' best neighborhood, has been occupied by Mr. Eve and his family and will continue to be their home.
