Early Locomotives in America and Horatio Allen’s Role
Horatio Allen, a young engineer, helped import the first European locomotives to America for the Delaware & Hudson Canal Company. The America and Stourbridge Lion arrived in 1829. the Lion failed on trial due to weight. Allen later led the South Carolina Railroad, a pioneer southern line. First US regular-service locomotives included Best Friend of Charleston in 1830 and several others from 1831, including West Point, DeWitt Clinton, York, and John Bull. W M Ferguson will discuss retirement issues at Rock Island Station on Mondays.
